My Halo 5 Beta Impressions

First of all, I was very impressed by how much I did not outright hate everything

Secondly, the game under any control scheme is a little convoluted, and there is almost a fighting game level of button combinations at play to coordinate in a single standoff. (Thrust pack, melee, shoot, turn, throw grenade, sprint, smart-scope, sprint, jump, stablize etc.) I got used to it, but it was still strange. I do love clambering and even as a skill jumper you still have distance jumps you have to hit just right for clambering to be viable.

Ground pound is fairly balanced, as I barely get the chance to use it. Evading it with a thruster pack dodge (like a grenade) is pretty easy, its range of aiming is limited and you have to commit to using it after a certain charge level. So its not bad, maybe just a little weird. Its also got kind of an obvious sound indicator and its super obvious to anyone looking. The vertical geometry of most maps does not lend itself well to ghost ground pounds.

Smart scoping is a little weird, particularly on some guns, but its overall not a big deal to me. AR zoomed feels maybe more accurate; its still better to use at closer ranges though. Same with the highly precise bullethoze smg.

Power weapon spawns being obvious is cool. But it is strange after playing Halo 2 Anniversary that other weapons on map are kind of hard to spot… I liked the way H2A did that where even assault rifle spawn was sort of vague but denoted. Right now, some spots of the map are so dark (especially new midship) that weapon pickups are kind of just found by wandering. They should shimmer more at least? Idk. I know where they are now and thats fine. But even by halo 1 standards the weapons are not visibly obvious to pick up in my opinion.

The overall speed of the game is a little heavier than I was expecting too.

power weapon call outs when they spawn actually make for some interesting battles to gain control of those weapons, i had so many fun firefights on empire when the snipers came up

A lot of people don’t realize the mind games that can come up with a universal spawn alert and a timer with it. Kudos to you.

As a Halo noob, I personally thought the weekend Guardian beta was really good and totally enjoyed the character movements and abilities. Thought the gunplay was excellent as well, personally really liked the battle rifles/ DMRs, as these are my favourite class type of gun to use in shooters.

I was very comfortable with the default controller button configuration and have played alot of Titanfall/ Destiny and Battlefield this year it all felt very intuitive to me.
I think that having very little timeplay in previous Halo games means that I have no biased or issues with any of the additional/new features that they have added to Halo 5 - I cant wait to try more maps and game modes at the end of this month.

No, i do,
Ive played halo since the CE day’s
but, it still makes matches interesting + even with the call outs, it was still difficult to tell if the opposite team had picked it up or not

My Armored Core skills might come into use here after all. Cool.

damn…i´m really really really looking forward to next monday

I feel like Stabilization should not be affected by being shot. At least not one shot. Let me do it not zoomed maybe? It is a neat feature! Also, please increase lighting in the maps. The forged empire is almost too dark especially for blue team. I like sprinting as much as I did in Halo 4. It’s not bad. It just makes things play differently. Spartan Melee Charging should be a little more powerful maybe too. Idk, Maybe I just don’t know how I feel about it and am spit balling ideas.
