My gamertag is blocked?

Hi, I’m having a problem uploading stuff to my fileshare on Halo reach. Every time I try to, I get a message saying

“the name of the creator of this file is not allowed on Xbox live”

Why? What’s wrong with my name? I didn’t think the gamertag Mr Melo Yellow was offensive. I mean its based on a fairly innocent song by Donovan except misspelled and adding Mr to the front. I’ve already tried asking for help on the xbox forums but they said i need to contact 343 for help on this issue. Its really annoying not being able to use my fileshare.

Thanks

Nothing’s wrong with your name. The filter is the problem.

There is a word filter that Microsoft set up to process user-created content, and that filter is infamous for blocking perfectly-appropriate words. Among the list of “obscenities” it blocks are “basic”, “epic”, “glitch”, “mystery”, “puzzle”, “wolverine”, “basement”, and “assault”. Because your name is embedded in the user-created content (as the “Created By:” value), it can trip this filter.

The only fix is to change your gamertag (even though there’s nothing wrong with it). Nobody knows who runs the filter, but whoever it is, they are apparently accountable to no one. Microsoft’s tech support literally doesn’t even know about the filter, and 343i and Bungie can’t help you (because they don’t run the filter).

Woah woah woah. Don’t change your gamertag just yet.

There has been one other instance that I know of been in this exact same situation. Infact, Bungie staff has mentioned that there was no separate filter in Halo: Reach. (Link 1, 2, 3)

So, what probably happened is that while your Gamertag was allowed when it was created, some string within that gamertag was added to the filter, disallowing you to upload any user content within any Xbox LIVE game that passes through their filter (Halo 3 or Reach, Rock Band, etc.)

So yes, I am just verifying and adding the info that DavidJCobb has said. But this is where it gets interesting.

In the case of “Lord Friendship”, he took to the Xbox Forums for assistance. [A member of the Xbox Support Team] saw his case and forwarded this info and took it to the Xbox LIVE Enforcement Team.

Long story short, the term “Lord”, which was the reason why the filter has been tripped, was allowed back on the system. Happy ending.

Now, they do look at this stuff on a case by case basis (Just look at that forum thread), but it is worth it by posting at the Xbox Support Forums before you go out and change and gamertag.

Don’t hope for miracles, however. Assume worst case scenario and you need to change your Gamertag, but hopefully, the Xbox [Support] Team can help you out.

Edit:
For your convenience/pleasure, here notable posts made by Bungie Staff from the Lord Friendship HBO thread.

Wow, thanks for the help guys. Really useful advice. I guess I’ll have another try at contacting xbox support in the forums. Hopefully my case will turn out like lord friendships did, but like you said, I guess I shouldn’t expect any miracles.

Thanks again for the help

> Would the same filter apply to the service tags? Last week I started having my service tag flagged as inappropriate and auto-changed every time I logged in. The tag is ‘GUY’, not sure why that would flag.

From what I’ve heard, it seems to. “Epic”, for example, is blocked both in user-created content and in service tags.

I can’t help you but I can confirm that the Service Tag system runs by the same system as File Shares & Gamertag.

I have a problem… my gamertag is blocked… I was playing in matchmaking and then the game pulled me out and it said me “has been excluded because you had abandoned a lot of matches” I want to return to play but i don’t know how?
Can you explain me what I have to do???

Firstly, don’t revive old topics, secondly sounds like you been quitting a lot of matches.

Wow, that necro. Why do so many people necro 1 year+ threads? I’m fine with 1 month, but 2 years?
