This post has been a long time coming. I’ve played H5 more than almost anyone else, so I’ve experienced all of its aspects. Today, after getting ranked in slayer, it really pushed me over the edge. I’ve played many multiplayer games; I’ve been playing all my life. However, H5 is one of the most connection based games I’ve ever played. People often say that dedicated servers implies that people have the same or similar connection. This definitely isn’t true. When I play champion-level players (whether it’s in arena or warzone), I can hardly even aim at them. My scope won’t even turn red when I’m aiming directly at them when they’re 10 feet in front of me. There will be no aim-assist, and in some instances my aim is even pushed slightly away from them. When I watch high level champions or pros play on twitch, it literally looks like they’re playing on LAN. It’s a completely different game than the one I’m playing.
It’s to the point where I play 10 ranked arena games per season just to get the emblem. They’re my least favorite 10 games of the month. This season, I played champions or high onyxes or pros every game. They were all teams of 4 when I was searching with one person. I ended up winning 1 of my 10 games, averaging 10 kills and 12 deaths per game. I got ranked diamond 4. Last season it was the same thing, but I got ranked onyx 1500. The one before that, I got ranked onyx 1700. My friend accidentally searched one team arena game and we played a team of 4 of the top 10 champs who had won 60 of their 60 games this season. If my MMR is so high that I match these people when I’m unranked, then why am I not always placed at onyx 1700? Games won doesn’t seem to effect placement, nor does k/d. It all seems to be based on MMR, which is hidden.
I’ve played on new accounts and on bronze accounts in arena and in warzone to see what would happen. I found out that my connection in bronze level arena is infinitely better than my connection in onyx level arena. Also, the first few games of warzone were the same way. 343i has never confirmed this, but there definitely seem to be hidden ranks in warzone. This would explain why my connection in my first few warzone games is perfect and I play complete noobs, but then 15 games later the connection becomes much worse and I play the same people as I would on my main tag.
All that said, with my level of skill and my connection to the servers, I can’t even come close to competing with people who are playing on what is essentially LAN. I never plan to play more than 10 arena games per season. I’ll stick to warzone where the connection is usually better and I’m not playing people who have a huge connection advantage on me. A lot of people who read this post probably won’t understand all of it, but I know people who work for 343 know exactly what I’m talking about. Maybe one day these things will be addressed, but I don’t really have much hope that they will be.
hey man, at least they recognize you for your efforts, i do the same and win almost every time and they place me in gold, GOLD! It frustrates me when i do better than diamond or some onyx people and i get ranked gold…
Where are you from? If Europe that would help explain a lot of these frustrations you speak of.
Trust me I know the frustration, Similarly I tend to only play Arena to get a season rank and I’m usually done with it. And as the seasons go on - I keep getting ranked/placed lower and lower each time. But the skill levels of players doesn’t really seem to differ that much from Gold through to Onyx. In fact in some of my placement matches 2 months ago I found that I performed better against Onyx players and weirdly worse off against Platinum level players. I don’t understand.
I agree with you on the shot registration. I play arena, normally against Onyx players, and I feel like my shots do not register a lot. I would have my reticle on the player but I do not get any hit markers. However, in Warzone it seems like the connection is just a whole lot better. My shots almost always seem to hit properly. My shot percentage in Arena is significantly less than my shot percentage in Warzone.
If you are in Europe playing these high ranking players you will be playing on US servers immediately at a disadvantage. COD used to get slated for lag compensation not working properly, but at least recognised that lag was an issue.
Personally I await the day you can reengage region lock before I play again. In the meantime, Overwatch Beta starts tomorrow so I will be getting my shooter fix there and wait for 343 to address the lag issue

I live in the United states. Furthermore, I’ve never played a foreign onyx or champion player who doesn’t have a connection advantage over me.

We can only hope that these new matchmaking preference options will help alleviate this issue (though I personally doubt it).
This is coming from someone with an average mp of over 5, not sure why they are not addressing. At least speak up and say 'hey guys, I know there is a problem, and we are working on it". I was a diamond level player and I have pretty much quit Arena to go to WZ because If I lose at least it’s not affecting my rank. This whole system is -Yoink-, and no one will even tell us they are working on it. No it’s not just Europe, it’s America, it’s everywhere. I am glad someone with a high rank posted about this. Maybe they will actually give a crap.
