After release and trying to make time for halo around work, my girlfriend and school i have almost reached sr50 and got to get a very strong taste for most of the game elements. I want to address this issue of the DMR within the game, i find myself getting killed by it quite a bit, and a lot of enemies and team mates having it as their tool of destruction. Im not saying that everybody uses it, just that to me its becoming the “best” gun in the game. Please be patient in reading my long -Yoink- post, and dont post stupid immature things in this thread that arent constructive in nature. Thanks in advance to all that read this waste of my time, and yours
The DMR in itself is taking on the role as the workhorse gun of the halo game, a feature that many common halo players are used to, comparing it to the BR in halo 3. The only problem is that every other gun in the game has its weak spot, the BR loses its 3 burst spread at further ranges and can be potentially hard to manage in close quarters, the light rifle is pretty balanced id say, its a little bit better for longer ranges with its 4 shot while scoped, but its slightly slower fire rate or crosshairs can be a little hampering to someone who is more used to the DMR from reach or the BR from halo 3 when compared to closer range hipfiring. The carbine to me seems better for close range with its fast fire semi automatic capabilities, but at longer ranges it becomes a little harder to handle with its shots starting to spread and being hard to trace an opponent through the scope while trying to rapidly pull the trigger, leaving the carbine a decent gun in the hands of someone with a good trigger finger and aim. Onto the assault rifle, imo this is the best close range gun with its high damage, and decent range, the supressor is the best gun at very close range even beating out the assult rifle only at the closest of ranges, the storm rifle seems pretty hard to use with it being decent at stripping shields but lacking a little bit extra for longer mid ranges with a quick to approach overheat, all of these fully automatic weapons are good at the closest ranges but fall short once they get to around mid range where the BR takes over as king. After looking at all of these weapons the only one left is the DMR, the DMR was designed to be a long range gun, but with its design of low recoil and low bloom it makes it just as effective at its long ranges as it does with closer ranges, this mechanic makes the DMR very good for most aspects, and it leads to me to get frustrated when my gun isnt capable of keeping up with it, not because of what i picked, but because at the moment the DMR is solid for everything within the game, except for straight up charging people and all of that business. Obviously 343 wanted to have some sort of online balance with weapons with all of them having a good and bad area tailoring to a certain player to adapt their style for a certain weapon, like sneaking around with the storm rifle, or getting good vantage points for good scoped shots with the light rifle. But with the DMR there isnt anything bad about it, sure it might lose to the BR every now and then sure it might get beat by the assault rifle at really close range. But it allows the player to play quite a few different styles without a real negative consequence for picking that gun. When i use the assault rifle i try to stick close to buildings, when i use the light rifle i try to sit back and shoot scoped at people, with the DMR i can do mostly anything, kind of defeating the purpose of every other weapon in the game, it shouldnt be like halo 3 where the best player dominated because they were best with the gun that everyone had, 343 obviously changed that when they put in customized classes with different types of weapons with their own strong points. The DMR at the moment is the only gun that can be used for a few multiple purposes with ease, while you can really only use the assault rifle for closer ranges and trying to kill people at longer with the BR can take a while due to the bullet spread. This isnt about the DMR being overpowered, but to older halo example its just the good ol’ gun that was good for everything that everyone would strive to be good at because it got the job done. But this isnt older halos, this is Halo 4, where they have different guns specifically made for certain purposes to tailor to players certain styles. It is hard for some to see this because they’re used to that aspect of halo, but 343 has changed it with class specialization and many different types of guns to start with, that is why the DMR is out of place in halo 4 at the moment.
After my long discussion, i feel like i have a decent approach to fixing the issue with the DMR dominating most forms of combat at the moment, something along the lines like either slowing down the fire rate of the DMR while its unscoped, or making it 6 shots while its unscoped. Just to make it still useful in the right hands for someone who wants to use it for longer range battles, but not too powerful in closer quarters situations. This change would only add to the multiplayer balance that i feel like 343 is trying to make with its many different guns for us to start with. I guarantee if this was like halo 3, with only the DMR being there without any class specialization or customization from a plethora of weapons there wouldnt be any complaining with the DMR, but with the change of pace in balance of weapons it leaves an issue with the DMR holding its multi range advantage over the heads of every other starting weapon at the moment.
