My Complaint Regarding SpOps and Music

As of late, Spartan Ops has been a hot topic, so I thought I throw some thoughts out there. Rather than repeat the basics like repetitive maps and gameplay, I’m going to address an issue that I haven’t seen too much talk about.

The music.

This, for me, is one of the biggest problems with Spartan Ops; the poor choice of the music. To put it plainly, whoever chose the music for each mission did a terrible job, stemming largely from the fact that they continually went back and used the same tracks over and over. Easily the biggest offender, especially in the second half of the season, is Swamp. More specifically, the part from 1:13 onwards. This song pops up in almost every mission in the second half of the season, and I feel this creates a couple of problems.

Firstly, hearing the same music helps to amplifly the repetitive nature of the levels, causing them to become even more of a chore.

Secondly, (and this is subjective) starting at 1:13, the track takes a serious dive in quality, before reaching the worst point at 1:45. There is absolutely no Halo vibe in it whatsoever, and the emotions it invokes is annoyance and frustration. Emotions you certainly don’t won’t the player to be feeling.

What makes this sting even more is that Swamp is used over tracks which would’ve added to the ambiance of the levels, not to the mediocrity. For example, Immaterial would’ve married perfectly with the level Switchback, due to the sheer creepiness of the Harvester and the surrounding area. Similarly, the use of the more ambient tracks like Requiem, Legacy, Haven, Solace, Aliens, and Foreshadow would’ve added greatly to the environments in similar manner. In fact, Foreshadow does just that in E10CH2, where you have to activate three beams to open the door to Apex. For me, the use of that tracks makes the level a blast; a sentiment that would not be shared if the track had’ve been Swamp.

Likewise, too many combat tracks weren’t used enough. These include tracks like Awakening, Gravity, Escape, Pylons, Push Through, Convoy, To Galaxy (both the original and the extended versions), the first half of Cloud City, This Armour, Mantis, Immaterial, Arrival, 117 and Sacrifice. All these wonderful tracks, many of which were used only once, are sidelined for Swamp(!!), and to a lesser extent, Ascendancy, Faithless, and Intruders. This is a real shame, as using the right combat track at the right moment can really get the blood pumping. This can be evidenced in the previous Halos and in Haalo 4 itself; for example, would the twin Scarab battle at the end the Covenant, or the massive fight at the end of NMPD HQ, or the trench run through the Didact’s ship be half as epic without its accompanying tunes, or if said tunes were replaced by Swamp or Ascendancy?

I think not.

Needs more options like Reach firefight had. Other than that, I like it.

SpOps, needs:
A. Vehicle Levels
B. Ability to call in reinforcements
&
C. Call down your own Personal Ords and Vehicles
THATS ONLY ONE PART
MUSIC:
I really would like music from ODST and Reach Firefight. Its heard when you reach Wave 5 on a Round.

> Needs more options like Reach firefight had. Other than that, I like it.

I concur.
If SpOps had options, i would’ve loved to have activated Skulls. Old Skulls and New Skull (like Grunt Funeral)

Did the music implementation not bother anyone else?

lol, i knew i forgot to write the “music” part. Like i said, i rather hear some music from the Firefight games from ODST and Reach. It keeps the mission going, if you know what i mean. And yes, the music from SpOps, is indeed boring and constantly hearing Desecration, just gets annoying, lol.

I feel like Swamp’s last third is actually good combat music, and its frequent use helped to make it more memorable in a game where not many pieces actually stood out. At the same time, I agree that it did help to emphasize the repetitive nature of some of the missions, and that its overuse made the soundtrack feel more lackluster than it otherwise would have.

I think Swamp is just a symptom of a larger problem: many if not most of the music tracks in Halo 4 aren’t memorable at all. They’re not bad, but they’re blah.

The problem with the music of halo 4 is, if you heard it in a Micheal Bay movie or JJ Abrams movie, you would just move on, you wouldn’t stop and be like: Wow that sounds like halo music. And that’s the problem.

That’s true, it certainly sticks in my mind. :stuck_out_tongue:

I should say that that, up to 1:13, the track makes for a nice ambient piece.

I think what made Marty’s music so memorable was the fact that he never strayed to far from his themes (I should mention I know very little about the actual composition of music, so I’m probably using the wrong word) and used them throughout the game, causing everyone to become familier with them. For example, in the Halo 2 soundtrack. Weight of Failure (the Arbiter’s theme) is also present in Ghosts of Reach, working behind the drums. It’s quite amazing how layering the drums over the top turn the music from good cutscene music, into good combat music, as well as creating familiarity for the player.

You know, if you play your own music via Xbox Music, you can easily replace in-game music without disrupting dialogue, gameplay, etc. It helps with film making and easter egg hunting, etc.

It’s just a shame they haven’t provided any sound options. My hard drive is currently 29.3 GB free out of 685 GB and nearly all the films have in-game music recorded.

Definitely…especially the dialogue. It gets really annoying to constantly hear Palmer and her “Egghead, Hingehead, etc.” remarks, lol.

I agree, Spartan Ops could have had better tracks during combat. Hell the mission where you have to drive the tanks. Thats combat music right there. The track is Mantis I think.

Honestly I have repressed the memory of the individual missions so much that I couldn’t remember there even being music, much less constantly reused music

Push Through. And I agree, it certainly adds to the action.
