Before you guys go off on me, I do know that Frank O’ Connor said that there will be ranks in H4 but I address that in this commentary if you decide to watch it.
This is another unorthodox commentary where I talk about how social and ranked playlists are vital to the Halo franchise. I’m not trying to sound like an elitest that thinks only good people should play with each other. I’m merely pointing out that its not fair to everyone to have someone that has never played halo match up against someone that lives on the game. It just drives away fresh players because they get dumped on by guys that play a lot more than them and vice versa. Anyway, hope you guys like it!
People’s excuses include:
Buying/selling creates issues with Microsoft
Players “bully” other players because they are higher ranks than them
Trueskill is good enough
I don’t really see how any of these are actual problems/solutions.
The thing is, 343 decided to grant everyone a progression rank. Okay, cool, that’s fine. While I don’t particularly like the idea of weapon unlocks (another argument), I can enjoy them. However, 343 decided to neglect an entire population of Halo by not supplying a visible rank based on skill alone - not time played, not objectives completed, not challenges - pure skill (win/loss, kill/death, Halo 3-style formula).
I don’t understand why they wouldn’t include one. Bungie included one, although they changed it and it failed miserably. Instead of going back to what worked (boosting and selling aside), 343 followed in CoD’s footsteps of taking away any sort of skill-based ranking system and only created a progression system.
Your argument isn’t for why the ranking sytem needs to be visible. Trueskill does not need to be visible in order to match players just like ranked Halo 3. They could go into Halo 3 right now and hide every rank in the ranked section and it would function the exact same.

you are absolutely right, but trusting that something is working without seeing it in motion is very hard to do

I agree with that, and I also think there is another reason your skill rank being visible is very important, and that is the incentive to try.
If I am struggling against my opponents game to game and it seems like I am barely winning half my matches, it would get disheartening unless there is a goal to strive for.
Great video. Great points. Everything you said was true, very rational, and simply necessary. I think my favorite thing that you said was how much such a simple, easy to implement, and logical MM system goes such a long way to making the game excellent and all players- competitive and casual alike- happy with it. It really is as easy as that, 343 Industries, and I hope you guys did it right this time around with H4 and are listening to the intelligent portion of your fanbase. We’re approaching the end of the year of 2012 and gaming has been around and evolving for more than 30 years. It is inexcusable to still be getting things as laughably simple and intuitive as properly implementing a skill-based MMing system wrong at this point in the life of the video game industry. All that being said, cannot flipping wait for H4! Looks fantastic.

That’s true. Even if there is no ranking system, I will still find a way to enjoy the game just like I did with Reach
> agree with OP. There are many, MANY more sensible arguments to include visible ranked MM. But I feel you hit the covered the major ones.

> EDIT: wow excuse my English! hahaha I messed up that sentence pretty bad eh? oh well you get the just.
