My 1st ranked match

My first ranked match was a 1v1 blitz, I had no expectation of having an easy match, but I sure as hell didn’t think it’d put me up against a champion player. Does this game search for people of similar rank (or still placing) or does it just grab random players? Again, I had no placements whatsoever, and it pit me against a champion player. Look in my game history for details on who the player was. (I was playing shipmaster in 1v1 ranked blitz)

Edit: I just looked and turns out this guy/gal is the #5 champion of 1v1 blitz right now. No wonder I got my yoink kicked!

Yeah…it seems like placement matches are random. Sorry you had such a rough experience dude.

Because the player base is so small that the matchmaking system can’t afford to be picky.

I remember I heard people talk about a hidden rank stat that increases or decreases based on how well you do, and that affects who you’re paired with. So since that was your first ranked, the game probably didn’t have an accurate gauge on how good you are, so that’s how you got paired with the Champion. Now that you’ve got a loss under your belt, the game can recognise what skill level to pair you against next.

This is more or less what I was thinking.

Lol it’s all good. Too bad they’re pretty random though

2v2 or 3v3 ranked matches would be better for you, 1v1 anything just guarentees embarassment.

I’m pretty sure that’s what it is. If you play team war a lot it’s more noticeable then in the ranked playlists.

True, but I’d rather fail myself than fail my teammate(s).

Keep playing 1v1. Playing 2v2 and 3v3 exclusively is the best path to get stuck and never improving.

That’s another reason I chose 1v1, in a duel I know everything was either my fault or my opponents fault, not an unfixable variable due to teammates.

1v1 is just rushing. Most of those matches end within 15 mins

That’s just how competitive is played. You try to win. If you can win quickly, then do it. If your opponent can be defeated quickly, don’t waste time.

15 minutes is a good duration. Not too dragging and not too stomped.

1v1 isn’t just rushing, if you experience that is because you need to improve your game.

Honestly I would suggest playing Skirmish only for your first few games until you find a leader you like and until you can at least win a 1v1 with a Normal-difficulty A.I. without any problems. Then, I would practice playing with real-life people in Versus AI. I know the players there are pretty good, so even if you don’t feel like you are doing too well your teammates can probably fill in the skill deficiency. After you feel comfortable beating the Heroic AI, then I would challenge other players. I followed a system similar to this, and it really helped me. As a Rank 13, I can defeat players who have been playing the game quite a bit more than I have simply because I have trained with the A.I.

The second thing I would mention is that you do not need to buy the DLC unless you really want to. One reason I am saying this is because I do well even though I have not purchased a single leader. In fact, the only leader I have really considered buying is Jerome. Second, the daily and weekly challenges that give you XP only use the free leaders, so in order to complete those challenges you will not be playing with your DLC leaders if you purchased them. Third, if you look at posts on the best leaders, the default ones are pretty high up there.

I know I expanded my talk beyond the ranked playlists, but I really do love this game, and we don’t get very many new players. So, when I hear about newcomers, I personally enjoy helping them out.

I appreciate all of this friend and good on you for welcoming people like that! But, as kind as this reply was this was my first ranked match. Not first match overall mind you. I have done plenty of team wars (won a majority) and have been playing since Halo Wars 1. Also, too late about the DLC as I pre-ordered the Ultimate edition, lol

A GOOD duration is 40-70 mins, where wits and strategy are used while adapting your army counters instead of pumping out the cheapest army and attacking the enemy before they can get their base to level 2, it’s a cop-out of the full experience just for a statistic.

That’s your opinion. And it defo differs from the game’s direction. Go watch the original Halo Wars vidocs. It was always the devs intention to make HW a fast paced RTS were games take as much as a Halo (FPS) match.

If you’re looking for a long duration dragging RTS this is not and will never be the game you’re looking for.

It is normal my friend, no worries. Just play the matches and try to ¨survive¨ those mismatches. In btw you will get the place you belong once you rank. It is completely normal if you havent ranked yet.

No there’s just no way a normal RTS with heavy base building/economics elements can be comfortably played in the same pace as a full on run-n-gun shooter. Maybe an RTT (e.g. World in Conflict) can do it, but defiantly not an RTS.
