Music is good, but sounds like World War II Games

Haven’t seen this topic come up at all here, but I felt it needed to be voiced.

From the first time I opened up the main menu of the Halo 5 Beta, the music struck me as odd. It doesn’t sound bad by any means, it’s great music, the problem is that it paints a picture of a World War II game such as Medal of Honor, not a Halo game set many centuries in the future. It just doesn’t have that epic Halo feel.

I can tell you for one thing, out of all of the Halo games, the only game that had music that, upon hearing, instantaneously made me crave playing the game was Halo 1. Since then, not even Marty himself could capture that effect (not for me, at least, but Halo 3 came close, even though it is not my #1 favorite of the franchise).

Anyway, I present to you evidence for you to compare on your own:

(Curse word, I know…) Call of Duty 3 menu music:

Completely agree, sounds just like a war film score.

Why can’t we just have the ACTUAL halo theme on the main menu, at least as the opening track. No Halo theme on Halo, = no Star Wars fanfare on StarWars…

Makes no sense

As a person who migrated from PC MOHAA. He shown me that and I mentioned it sounded like a war movie score. While it is not bad, in fact an amazing score, it is not halo. I honest hate sounding like that “it is not halo guy” but the music is almost the most important aspect of a story and universe. It sets the tone and mood. Thus, we need it to pay homage to its ancestors.

Fully agree with the Star Wars comparison.

It’d be awesome if 343 could pick up Marty now that he isn’t working for Bungie anymore, but I doubt that will happen. Apart from that, there are many other great composers out there that seem to be more than capable of capturing the Halo feel in the music, I’m not sure why they went this direction as Halo 4 seemed to be more in line with it, though slightly off, not nearly as far misaligned as this one.

Guess no one else cares about this?

Personally, I think the music of a game is one of the most immersing factors. Without the amazing music they had, many cult classic or even legendary games would’ve been far less fun (Final Fantasy, ChronoTrigger, Shadow of the Colossus, etc.)

I think it’s highly important that 343i takes the time to get this part right, or at least close enough for it to sound like Halo!

It really rubs me the wrong way because I watched quite a bit of Deep Space Nine (yes, Star Trek, I’m old, shut up) - the tonalities between the two tracks (the primary themesongs of each) sound so similar that it makes me feel quite uneasy.

Dragon Ball Z didn’t have the Dragon Ball theme song and it was still good.

It gets a little more original and futuristic war shooter sounding if you listen long enough, but yeah the initial music is kind of… meh

The Dragon Ball theme song is to Dragon Ball Z’s theme, what On a Pale Horse is to Leonidas.

I did bring that up in a post. There is little (announcer?) to no Halo feel in 5, including music. Generic war game. I never thought I would bring this up, but I miss Davidge. Halo 4 OST had it’s generic moment, but did carry the Halo theme, even if subdued.

Some of us DO care, A LOT! Thank you for posting.

halo 4 had some great music, and it was still halo. but the menu music was not halo, just like Halo 5 will. the last mission in Halo 4 was my favorite because it felt good. it think it was the music playing that set the mood and made me feel badass. halo 5 may still have god music inn the campaign but like halo 4, it will not be used as much as it should. Additionally, Halo 4 Menu did not feel like halo becuase of the men.u music. it should play a random track

I agree with OP,
Music is a key factor when creating an alternate universe in which a person can immerse themselves in, whether it be in a game or movie. Whilst it doesn’t necessarily have to be copied and pasted a small motif in the opening menu to my mind is essential especially when it comes to Halo…
Halo 4 had this, even though it wasn’t the carbon copy of CEs theme, when the sound track gets all hi pitched and synthy it triggered that sense of “yes I am playing an epic futuristic shooter that is Halo”

Get those choirs back in there 343

I would imagine that just like past halo games the music from the beta test will not be the same music we hear in the final releases main menu. Keep calm and lets wait and see.

I’m not the only one who noticed then! Yeah it really sounds like the DS9 theme. And honestly, I love it! DS9 is like my favourite Star Trek series.

Aha, I knew someone else would hear some DS9 in Halo 5’s new theme. Guess I’m the only one that both hears the similarities and dislikes it, however. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol I’m actually getting toward the end of rewatching the entire DS9 series on Netflix with my wife. Somehow I didn’t notice the similarities, but now that you mention it you’re right.

Big band swing jazz is what was popular during WW2. I don’t hear any of that in Halo 5

Troll? No

I’m correct, there’s a big difference. I’m a seasoned musician with a Julliard degree. I think I know more about WW2 era music than you do.
