If I could link you guys to the video, I would, but my phone is a piece of junk and I dont want to fight it right now. Anyhoo. Greenskull threw up a video of some H5 beta gameplay yesterday and brought something up in it that I hadn’t really realized until he did (epic paraphrase inbound)
Multiplayer is being taken way to serious all of the sudden.
If you’re interested enough I would go to his YouTube channel and check it out. It’s “ReadyUpLive” in case you were unaware.
What do you guys think? Can the whole “Infinity Spartan training program” thingy that 343 seems to love so dearly work with the more light hearted elements such as flaming helmets, grunt birthday party, inclement weather and other things of that nature as seen in Halo: Reach?
Do you want to see those kind of elements return or should the multiplayer stay in its current form?
A small digression but a similar note:
I personally liked the wall of separation between campaign and multiplayer in past Halo’s. It kept the serious, space bound action-drama away from the more laid back meat grinder of multiplayer. It felt like two different experiences, as it should. Now everything has been bled into one via “Infinity”. My problem with this is that NOBODY is thinking about how they are “a part of a training simulation aboard the UNSC Infinity” while they are busy getting tea bagged on Haven. So all “Infinity” has really done, is strip us of features. Like the ones previously mentioned. Nobody gives two -Yoink- about the whole Infinity thing so please god don’t let it hold you guys back from adding cool features.
I was thinking this too. And before anyone says “Halo 4 was meant to be fun and look how it turned out!” Halo 4 failed at being real fun. It was fun, but with no challenge and ranking it fell apart.
That’s why I want Elites and new armor parts in multiplayer, because it should be about fun, not how the Infinity War Games works.
I think the whole idea of linking multiplayer to the actual story is pretty trivial.
I liked it the way it was in Halo 2 and 3, simple, just Spartans/Elites killing other Spartans/Elites. That way people could come up with their own ideas as to why they are fighting, and make up cool stories, sort of like RvB.
I doth very much agree. While I can understand why they wanted to link the MP to the cannon the way they did, it’s kinda pointless. We still get to play game modes like Juggernaut, Infection, and Grifball. Those modes don’t really make any sense within the cannon, so why is it even part of it? Why would the UNSC let their Spartans waste time and money playing custom games? I would very much like for MP to go back to classic Halo style. That way they can do whatever they want without any worries of “that doesn’t fit into the cannon!”
If what’s allowed into Infinity multiplayer is being affected by it’s connection to Halo’s story then it should no longer be cannon. It doesn’t make the multiplayer any better; it can only make it worse.
If the “kewlness” of canonical multiplayer is acting as a detriment to the multiplayer itself, then it should be removed.
If you want fun go play big team, that’s what I do anyways.
what about the post game hi-5s. that was a light hearted element and everyone complained about it.

There’s a difference between light-hearted and cheesy. Halo CE grunts were light-hearted. Brofests are cheesy. Might as well have “that just happened” and “boom” voiceovers.
The linking it to the story has always been a problem. The fact that you have to have every weapon from the campaign in the multilayer is also pretty ridiculous. Having a small number of weapons to pick from on the battle field would lead to less clutter on the maps, and more meaningful weapon choices. Also balancing the weapons would be a lot easier. In Arena Shooters, the point of having different weapons is to gain some new advantage that your current weapon doesn’t have. 343 lost out on a great opportunity to really make the promethian weapons unique because they made them counterparts to the weapons we already had. Forerunners are advanced beings, their weapons are supposed to show it, but the BR could beat the LR? The shotgun out shot the Scattershot? Those weapons could have actually been the true Power Weapons on the maps. Or they could have left them out of MP (minus customs and Action Sack type games) and made truly unique and very powerful weapons that utterly destroy everything in the campaign when you finally get to pick them up. Then you could have used those weapons against the Didact to “kill” him instead of a button sequence.
This is why things like loadouts in H4 failed. They had to make each weapon have a counterpart instead of making them unique. The AR = SR = Supp. They had minor differences, but they were the same basic weapon whereas in CE, the AR shredded people and the PR had plasma stun and destroyed overshield. Each weapon needs to have it’s place in the game which is why the whole Smart Scope thing also tends to break this balance. The AR can now take out people mid range, which means the BR is no longer the viable mid-range option and the AR is very dominant because it’s easy to use. I wouldn’t care about the ADS looking crap if they just kept the weapons functioning like they should.
That was sort of off topic, but it’s similar to and fits with the whole “Infinity is spartan training” thing they had, they were trying to tie it into Spartan Ops, which failed pretty hard. If they bring that back, then they really don’t get it. It literally lasted one season and never moved from there. They should just call it matchmaking, let people go kill, and that’s it. People relate to their Spartan with the customization options, not taking it into the campaign and completing missions. It was a good idea, but just on paper. And peoples emotions don’t show in data you put on paper. A good example is that I listen to Metal and I like stealth over guns blazing and explosions. I’m also a fan of the classics, so I usually go with black armor on my spartan with the Mark V or VI armor. Someone else might really like lizards so they would have green armor to match reptiles and pick a helmet like the Scout Helmet that looks a little reptilian. My thoughts are it looks like a MotoX helmet, but again, it’s all in the players perception.
I also feel that saying it’s just training simulation really turns people off the idea of putting in any effort. It’s like it really hold no significance, whereas if you tell them it’s the battlegrounds, they might subconsciously think that the battle actually means something in the bigger picture. Like you actually are fighting for something important.
First of all it’s “all of a sudden” not “all of the sudden”.
Secondly, the multiplayer being taken seriously is nothing new, just ask all the tryhards in matchmaking. There have always been people who took it seriously. But yes, I suppose a few little things could make the game more fun and interesting, like flaming helmets and the like (I just wish the flame would turn invisible when you have camo).
I wish 343 were taking multiplayer seriously.

Pfft.
I’m also not a fan of “canonizing” the multiplayer because all it really does is introduce limitations based on what makes sense within the story/universe and what doesn’t.
it’s like they want there to be a reason the spartans are fighting eachother. but there doesn’t have to be a reason…they are fighting because…who cares?
the reason is “lol because multiplayer”…just leave it at that, IMO.
