Multiplayer tips for a newbie?

While I played a bit of Halo before (mostly 3 and Reach), I’ve never played the PvP before because I didn’t have Xbox Live. Now that the MCC’s coming to PC, I thought I’d try it so I can get a little more out of the games.

So, what are some things I should know going into it? If I ever play PvP in other games, I tend favour tactical shooters where everyone dies in 1-2 shots, so all of Halo’s shields and health bars kinda scare me.

If you prefer low time to kills (dying in 1-2 shots) then I would recommend mainly sticking to SWAT, a Slayer game variant (Slayer is Halo’s name for Team Deathmatch, get a number of kills to win), where a single shot to the head will kill. Most of the other modes I’m aware of will require 4-5 shots to the head from the starting precision weapon to kill so you may want to avoid those (starting precision weapons are usually the burst Battle Rifle or the magnum pistol, along with an automatic assault rifle or smg). As for actual playing tips I’ll leave that for the pros cause I’m still pretty bad myself. I can’t speak for how the population will be on PC, but currently on Xbox there are a lot of sweaty players who love to ruin the day for less skilled players like me, so from one noob to another the main tip I can give is just try to stick with it and not give up from frustration. Good luck!

Best new tips for a newbie? Don’t kill your teammates and don’t quit games earlier.

Grenades + BR are your friends
Dont understimate the needler and the plasma pistole
Dont do a push alone

Remember that you can move laterally as well as forward and back. A good strafe technique will make you harder to hit.

If you’re looking for one shot modes, SWAT and snipers are good. Be careful with snipers, though- a lot of people are wicked accurate. Also, beware of no scopes; some maps are close range, depending on the game.

Also, grenades are your friend. Whenever I get a plasma, I tend to throw it before even shooting. Often, it will guarantee you at least trade (assuming you can land the stick). Leading with a grenade is also useful, since it usually requires one or two shots to finish someone off afterwards.

A bit more on grenades. If you know someone’s hiding around a corner, it’s a great way to flush them out. They’re also really useful if you want to flee, because you can drop one at your feet.

One final note- it may seem obvious, but accuracy is super important! You can have the best reflexes in the world or the best weapons, but you have to hit your opponent. I’d play games like swat if you need to work on it- the one shot modes force you to be accurate. Although hitting one or two headshots is different than sustained combat, it’ll at least help to adjust.

If you’d like more tips on swat or grenades, check out my youtube channel (shameless plug; same as my username here). I have videos with tips on both. Also, if you have any specific questions, feel free to let me know. I only check this forum once every couple weeks, so give me time to reply.

Edit: Just realized I forgot the most important rule for most game modes- don’t stray from your teammates! With full shields in play, you won’t even survive a 2v1 without a power weapon (unless they’re n00bs). It’s a mistake I made when I first got Halo 5, despite playing since Reach.

I would say play swat to get better at aiming for the head.

As a noob myself this was very good info.

First, don’t team kill or leave games. Don’t rage at people. As for techiniques, toss a grenade around a corner to kinda flush out your enemy. Ive found it better to stick to being in a group. And its good to be sneaky, crouching lets you not be visible on enemy radars. Also, learn the maps. Where the players spawn and where the weapons spawn and where to camp. And its been mentioned but SWAT is a 1-3 shot kills pending if you hit the head. And when playing swat, jump. Jump all around because you’ll be harder to hit and you’ll have the height advantage. Hope that helps

With enough practice you can adjust quickly, especially if you are good at the games you mentioned earlier. A lot of the games can be different from each other but the fundamentals are there, try combos, bxr, nadeshots and noob combos etc. These three are what I use a lot, you also wana try to use a variety of weapons, develop a skill for all, don’t just jump on the rockets and nade spam because you get one or two easy kills.

Loadout weapons are your best friends, a lot of the time you wont be able to rely on power weapons so building up your confidence with the weapons you spawn with is key. If you can try and find some people to party up with, more often than not people will love to try and help you improve.

Hope this helps, I’m not the most detailed person so if you need me to explain anything further let me know.

The longer TTK makes it harder to solo than most games, just stay with someone at all times.
