So, I was just listening to a Q&A/ Podcast and one of the guys said that he heard through the grapevine that Halo 4 wasn’t originally going to have multiplayer and that it will most likely be a last minute addition. (The question pertaining to a MP beta for Halo 4.)
Rumors aside, hypothetically speaking, if Halo 4 did not have multiplayer, would it hurt the game?
/> Now that I’m thinking about it… If Halo 4 did not have multiplayer, the campaign would be getting way more attention, so that would be (In The Doctor’s voice) fantastic. More story, more greatness, but the replayability of multiplayer would be gone.
I personally think that multiplayer has become much too important in making games “good”. There has been plenty amazing single-player only games that have been story-driven without multiplayer making it popular. (i.e. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Shadow of the Collosus, etc…)
While I do agree that games these days focus too much on the multiplayer and neglect the single player portion of the game (I’m a firm believer that if I can’t enjoy a game when I’m playing alone then it just isn’t worth my money), making a Halo game without multiplayer would be too stupid to comprehend.
Truth be told, it wouldn’t kill the series but it would damage the hardcore section of players who rely on MP. Halo CE was great, it still IS my favorite of the series, but in today’s society with easy online and a heavily filled xbox social network, people see games like this:
Multiplayer > Singleplayer (or atleast people who grew up after the N64/PS1 era of games)
Games like CoD and BF are at the top of the selling charts these days because of their MP experiences, while other games like Skyrim are a bit under-hyped but are still heavy with single-player greatness which gives them a more respected stance with higher reviews. (I say this because me and all my friends have taken sides with the whole BF3 vs MW3 but we’re all looking forward to Skyrim and Halo CEA.) Other games like Crysis 2, Dead Space 2, AC: B and the first 2 Gears of Wars relied heavier on story telling which made MP suffer a little but brought us a brilliant single-cooperative player experience. So did a lot of valve games like Portal and Half-Life.
> > Multiplayer is a big part of halo.
> > You take it out, you take out a key component to Halo.
>
> This. I honestly probably wouldn’t buy it if it didn’t have multiplayer. But Halo without multiplayer? It sounds unfathomable. Haha.
Well Bungie sapped the quality out of the Halo franchise and I would have said with Halo 1 that it was a key component of that game’s success.
It seems to me that adding features only because you’re expected to is a pretty lousy way of building a game because you take away the creative rights of the developers and their power to make the game in the best way possible. Halo 4 may well be in the same genera as Borderlands, and it would thus benefit by having more focus on exploration and co-op rather than on competitive multiplayer. So why force it, why demand something which doesn’t fit only because of the history of it’s brand name? Stubbornness, ignorance, stupidity, greed, obstinence, what great virtue justifies making a -Yoink!- out of a -Yoink!- just to make it fit in with the rest?
Lolwut, that person is an idiot, it’s as simple as that. We know for a fact that it is going to halo multiplayer, and improved forge, and theater. I would they set out to make a brand new trilogy and prove that they have what it takes to make Halo and leave out one of the biggest aspects of Halo?

Trololol. Also the ignorance is strong in this one.
halo is known as the best console fps… that is a completely asinine idea… there are many people who pay no attention to the campaign and strictly play multiplayer… i would not buy the next halo if there was no multiplayer
edit: if for some reason i ever wanted to see the single player, which i wouldnt… i would buy it used just as a way to make sure 343 makes no profit off it as i would not support them in anyway
> > you just made me think who would the other player be on halo 4 co op when he is supposed to be stranded on a forerunner planet?

> It should just be another Spartan. Multiplayer, including co-op, is non-canon anyway.
It would have to depend on how in depth the campaign is, and how much effort they put into the rest of the game. Personally for me though, I haven’t played an FPS in the past 7 years that didn’t have multiplayer.
Reading threads like this and seeing people go back and forth saying yes & no for multiplayer… All I got to say to 343 is, don’t make it some side project. If you’re going to do multiplayer, make sure you’re giving it all the attention it needs. Don’t just slap it on there. If you’re unsure or not able to put online at the forefront of your attention, then don’t even bother putting it in as you’ll just be driving people away by putting a half–Yoink- online component to a franchise that is well known for it’s multiplayer
I’m confused, Halo4 wasn’t going to have Multiplayer or Halo4 wasn’t going to have a Multiplayer Beta?

The use of post-tense and future-tense without much present-tense makes it read like nonsense.
Without the campaign, it’s just another shooter to not care about. Did Bioshock blow without its MP? Does FEAR suck because of its MP? Would anyone play GoW if it was only MP in the first place? What about Crysis, that need MP?
Heck, did you know that it was Halo: CE’s MP that was tacked on at the last minute? Between time issues and an individual or 2 upping the Pistol’s damage at the last second without approval (so the story goes), Halo: CE’s MP is a complete fluke… or just simply destiny
