Why would Spartans kill each other? Besides Fire Team Osiris and Blue Team… Are we all training to be the next Master Chief? Why are there so many Spartans on this halo ring? Maybe we’re still playing in the infinity ship’s simulators like in halo 5. Does anybody else care for a lore explanation behind halo Infinite’s multiplayer? I don’t think bungie had a lore for their multiplayer, which left it to our imaginations, which was fine… but the question will eventually arise to some players after murdering their fellow Spartans over and over… and over again.
I personally don’t care. As long as I get to keep shooting enemy Spartans, I’m a happy camper.
That being said, if a story explanation makes the lore nerds happy, I’m all for it! I just want the community to be satisfied all around the table.
I’m sure the lore explaination is the same as in Halo 4 and 5, training simulations. Last thing we need is inner conflicts during these troubling times.
Depends on where exactly all the Spartans are. If the Infinity does survive the beginning of Infinite then yes they are probably still training on there. I don’t mind too much about there being lore behind multiplayer. It basically makes your spartan canon so that’s pretty cool.

Even Reach Firefight was simulations as I recall. It’s been the canon all along.
Some good explanation of it in the Ghosts
of Onyx book too

Correct, it’s all canon. 343 canonized the past multiplayer modes from previous titles as well (although they insist on not splitting hairs on the details and accept it as canon).

What I do really like is the recent use of MP map training simulation settings as locations in the books:
Hang 'Em High in Shadows of Reach
Erebus VII from Halo 4 in Point of Light
I’m not too bothered by the multiplayer lore. It is nice, but at the same time detracts a little from the idea that the Master Chief is the ultimate soldier and our last best hope against the latest mankind exterminating enemy.

I’m not sure I agree on the detraction? How do you feel it detracts?
I’ve never really felt like multiplayer should have a place in the lore. It’s a fun game mode which takes advantage of the gameplay, nothing more.
Regardless they’ll find a way to continue the ‘War Games’ thing where it’s just a simulation anyway.

If we have a huge rank of super soldiers that have the same abilities and tech equipped as the Chief, then humanity is a huge super power that need not be concerned much about ground conflicts with The Covenant, The Banished, or anyone else; and the Chief is really just one in a million of these soldiers.
I realize that the lore says the Chief is better for a variety of reasons (luck, augmentation, skills, etc.) but as far as gameplay is concerned there is literally no difference from when you are playing as Chief vs playing as your own spartan in any other mode. I’m certainly not advocating for a difference in gameplay, just stating that there is a bit of a disconnect from the campaign always having us in dire straits that only the Chief can save us from, when there are thousands (or more?) of others just like him, again assuming that multiplayer is a part of cannon.

I mean, where do you draw the line on canon and allow some suspension of disbelief. In Halo 3 we just had Spartan-IIs supposedly (or maybe some Spartan-IIIs too?) but canonically there were only at best 75. Reach gave us Spartan-IIIs but even then at most 1000 or so. Spartan IVs in Halo 4 and Halo 5 are much more scalable, but even then in reality do you think there’s one Spartan-IV in canon for every Halo player?
Chief’s never been alone and isn’t ‘the best’ Spartan in many areas.
The canonicity of MP has always been problematic so we do just need to leave a suspension of disbelief. You’re never seeing more than 24 players at a time in any MP game to date so canon-wise we’re fine with that.

I’ve always thought it was best to just consider multiplayer non-canonical. I just hope 343 doesn’t make custom games canon

There’s no real reason for them to be canon, aside from 343’s insistence that all of Halo must be canonical and whatever happens must add to the overarching universe. Having the multiplayer non-canon never hurt the multiplayer at all.

exactly. I never even understood the questioning if it was canon at all, its red super soldiers carrying a flag shooting blue super soldiers. No one’s questioning the lore of chess lol

True, but that logic also cuts both ways, as having MP being canon has been rather superfluous. Don’t care about the ‘canonicity’? Then it can be disregarded and one can continue playing as normal. Want to add a little more depth to what your MP Spartan is doing? You can do that as well.
I really think MP being canon has been an extraneous (yet harmless) addition, and it always surprised me when people took issue with it.

It’s more that 343 is able to use it as a justification for why Elites aren’t playable or other mechanics. Like, “Its a Spartan training simulation, of course Elites aren’t playable in it!”

This gets thrown around a lot, and it simply isn’t true. 343i have established for years now that Elites train with Spartans in War Games simulations. Their exclusion is solely based upon gameplay decisions.
So far, nothing was been omitted from MP due to it being made canon.

I thought for sure that they didn’t add Elites because it takes place on the Infinity and that therefore means that Elites can’t be added to the game
More than that, I feel that 343’s insistence on canon authenticity means that gameplay would have to be different, like Reach, instead of just being a model swap like in 3 and 2.
I say it makes sense that you can’t play as an Elites because they would have to make them stronger than Spartans. I could be wrong but maybe it’s the shape of their head and that you can’t head shot them as easily or the fact that in halo reach they had their health act differently.
