Ok, this may sound stupid, and just me complaining, but after 4 days of having this game, I can easily conclude the matchmaking is very unfair, unbalanced, and annoying overall. The ranking system is based on wins, which makes literally no sense. Someone who get really lucky and does awful but gets on winning teams many games in a row can easily become a high rank and then of course, stay there because you can’t go back down in ranks. These people also leave the matches which they can’t win destroying any chance of a comeback by the members of what was their team. You’ve also got the other end of the spectrum. Extremely skilled players who have bad luck and are put in with bad players are placed in lower ranks and then they screw over the people in those ranks unless they are on the winning team. In that case, the players on the winning team may become the original people who got to high ranks with lucky wins. So now, when I begin a game of Arena as a Platinum 2, I either am placed against an entire team of extremely skilled players, or placed against a team filled with players of little skill whatsoever.
Why isn’t the matchmaking actually based on skill rating instead of wins? I mean, wouldn’t most people just have around 50-50 for win to loss eventually? Ranks would no longer change.
I seriously think that 343 should try something like the CSGO ranking system. It takes your kills, objective scores, round performance, and probability of you winning against the opposing team into factor when bringing you up a rank, or down a rank. Seriously though, for this win for rank system would only really work if people actually worked well as a team. Almost all of the time, in all of halo, people rarely work as teams and basically go off on their own attempting to get kills. People have even betrayed me for power weapons, but it doesn’t count because I got shot once and my shields haven’t regenerated right?
Overall, my main issues have to do with the ranking system based on wins, bad players/good players in the wrong ranks, and people leaving games so much.
Personally, I find multiplayer really fair! It ranks me up with people that play just like me, so it’s almost like fighting myself. Idk, it may just be bad luck man
From what I’ve seen 343 isn’t a fan of skill based ranking. It’s too bad b/c a win/loss system makes no sense and only causes a shorter lifespan for playing the game.
The ranking system was flawed from the get go because of the placement thing. In theory it is nice since it can jump start the ranks so ideally the great players would quickly get split from the ok player and the bad players. The problem is if an ok or bad players happens to get some decent matches for their placements they could be placed way higher than they should be so they will forever (or until rank resets) be stuck playing people way better than them which would not only ruin the game for them but also the people they are teamed up with.
They should have made everyone start off from scratch and work their way up, that way the great players will continue climbing while the bad and ok players will settle around where they should be. The first couple days would be painful for the ok and bad players but once people start getting where they should be it would be more enjoyable for everyone.

I know right?
I agree, it can be pretty frustrating when players leave. I’ve had it happen quite a bit already, though I think they are banning players who are AFK, betraying, quitting frequently, etc.
Wins I’m guessing they assume come with being skilled, but I’m in the same boat where I’ve been teamed up with people who don’t play as a team or quit and my rank drops. In Halo 3 it was never a problem for me in ranked playlists because I had a whole bunch of friends who played with me, so we won most of the games we played.
I still think it’s fun, but not nearly as competitive as Halo 3. I’m not as motivated to play it as I used to be either.

But don’t you think the win-loss rank system is flawed? People who get enough lucky matches in a row can reach higher ranks than they should be.

Sounds smart to me
I wish they did the same type of Ranking that Reach did with Areana with a ranking while in the game, It ranks you as a player and not on a team I remember a lot of games getting an Arena Score about the same as the top player on the Winning Team.
I like the system. If you win then you rank. I preferred the 1-50. But your objective in the game is to win
I’m fine with it, but I don’t think it’s working as intended or at least not how we expected it to be. I’m a Diamond 1 in Breakout and I heard somebody on my team complain about how he’ll never be able to get out of Platinum 2. If I’m a Diamond, why am I being paired with Platinum players? Unless it’s because not enough people were in matchmaking that were my rank?
I also got put up against a Champion (btw, he was Champion in 2 playlists) while I was still unranked. It ended very badly for us that match. I get that they probably have to put you in different skill ranges to see how you match up when you’re unranked, but being put against a Champion is a little extreme and unnecessary to me since I imagine it’s next to impossible to be immediately put into Champion. I think they need to integrate the 1-50 system into the tiers and make you work your way up.

Just like Halo 2 and 3, oh wait.
This game is extremely balanced, but yeah I’m not a fan of the ranking system. Love the game though.

My first match of warzone went 1000 to 200. My second game of warzone went even more difference. My third game I was actually doing ok and the game crashed. Not even close to balanced.

Of course i think it is flawed, i was just adding on to what you posted. The initial placement doesn’t seem to have any sort of reason to it, if 2 friends play all 10 matches together the one that did the worst in all 10 of those matches (according to some people both here and on reddit) ends up a higher rank than the person who did amazing, and since they played all 10 together they had the same win/loss ratio.
The System itself is one of the best in general. If not, other Games wouldn’t use it too. But 343i did some strange decision. First, why are you unable to rank down? I mean as exampel from silver to bronze. Sometimes people(like me also) are placed in a rank, which i still doesn’t deserve. And that can happen sometimes you get an false rank, and i don’t see it as a problem… because no ranking System is perfect. But if you placed to high should be able to get in a lower rank, to an Skilllevel which matches yours so you can train and get better. But if you got to high, and there are really really good player you stuck in that Skilllevel and can be frustrated…
Secondly: Why can’t we reconnect to an Game if we lost connection. Most people will have a good internet connection, for sure, but even so there can be sometimes problems and i kinda find it stupid, that my team have to lose, because i’m unable to reconnect. Third and in my opinion is currently the worst Problem: The Leaver, AFK and betrayer. 343i should do something about, and for me it seems the punishment for leavers etc isn’t high enough. Yesterday i and my nephew played together Breakout and he got teamkilled because he picked up DMR which want another Player. Such people is toxic, and as i send him a Message, that i reported him for teamkilling, he doesn’t seem to care at all. Why should he, the punishment is a joke …
But like a said, the Rank-System itself is very fair and good balanced, and still one of the best…it only needs a bit tweaking…

I disagree with you, CODs first game to introduce rank at a comp level is still 80% of peoples favourite games to play because of the ranked. If in halo 5 that 343i could make a casual play list and a ranked play list I think that would be a lot better. and other games that are ranked based some of the biggest known to day… CSGO, LoL, Dota 2, Hearthstone, they all have a ranked list and all have a casual list. Which is what 343 should do because yes a win to lose isn’t really fair when you are trying to play comp but your team mates are just casually playing not tending to try balls to the wall.
I would like to keep this thread going. Please continue to leave replies to the OP so I can get some more opinions on the new ranking system which personally, I dislike.
The placement seems horribly, horribly, off, with plenty of people getting placed too high and plenty of people not getting placed nearly high enough.
The win based matchmaking makes perfect sense, so that people play the objective instead of hording kills like they’re playing CoD.
Hoevever I do think not being able to drop in rank is rather unfair, and only resuts in people getting frustrated because they were put into too high of a skill bracket.
let’s just hope that the players this happened to get filtered into the bottom tiers of their brackets (IE Gold 1 Plantinum 1 and Diamond 1) so that everyone has a better time playing.
