Multiplayer Concerns

The free to play aspect doesn’t really concern me too much. It seems almost a necessity in this day and age to have a game even be remotely competitive and maintain a population. Why buy Halo Infinite for 60 bucks when Apex is super fun and free? I get it. My concern comes from the confirmation of them having a “Pro team” for feedback and suggestions I guess? In my opinion thats going to create another Halo 5 situation. The biggest issue I had with Halo 5s muiltiplayer was the lifeless maps that had no personality. Many of those maps just looked like reorganized versions of others, many looked like forge maps, textureless smooth, boring.

I am really concerned that the visual quality of Halo Infinite took a hit directly due to this desire to be more of an “e-sport” game. Games that traditionally don’t really require a lot of power to run focusing on high FPS. Well tbh i dont care at all about that. I’d rather have a 60 fps 1440p game that looks insane than a 120 fps game that looks average and uninteresting.

I think they should make some forge maps for the “pros” and make some actual interesting Halo multiplayer for the fans. If you really want a boring bare bones average cookie cutter multiplayer experience I guess the Pros are the ones that will give you the feedback you need to make that happen though.

the visual quality took a hit cause of what they are doing from a performance standpoint. 4k 60 is not easy and is not something many of the top-end graphics cards can do with high fidelity games. At the end of the day, they want consistent FPS in any scenario the player is in. While you are ok with 1440p 60 (I am as well), some will be playing in 4k and 343 wants them to have 60 as well. I honestly think that’s better from a user perspective. There are things they can add to guns to make them a bit less blan (lights on the shotgun for example), but I think a universal 60 is a good precedent in the long run

I’d lower my resolution to 720p if it means 120+ fps, even in campaign. I suspect Infinite will have this option on PC. 4k is great for huge TVs, but you really don’t need more than 1080p/1440p on a small PC monitor, and the jump for 60fps to 120fps is big. Next-gen consoles need to shoot for 120fps (at least at 1440p). I think console players will agree with me as new 120fps games launch on the PS5/XSX. Unfortunately, most TVs advertised as 120hz under $1000 are lying (native 60hz), so many players won’t even know what they’re missing out on.

With that said, my bigger concern is the maps and sandbox… Halo 5 had maps that accompanied it’s movement system (and esports target). I think that makes sense, it would maybe feel wierd playing on Sandtrap with thrusters. Halo Infinite’s gameplay seemed classic-like, so we might see some classic maps return and play well. However, the sandbox has changed. We don’t have deployable grav lifts, we have the grappleshot. Therefore, i would expect some alterations to the classic maps in Halo Infinite. Note that this has been happening since Halo 2, where some maps are obviously inspired by previous ones, but they give it some tweaks and a new name. All in all, i have hope that they’ll please me with some old and new maps.

I don’t even want to open the free-to-play can of worms, but i’ll say “it could be fine”.

Can’t wait to see a multiplayer showcase.

I am not very informed on the competitive issue, how do you see the competitive community of Halo, in general terms, that the multiplayer mode ends up being F2P? In the hypothetical case that it ends up being.

Yah I think the issue is that for the console space for whatever reason we have shifted from good looking character models, lighting and textures to prioritizing 4k. Idk why that is. Just make the game look good. 4k doesnt make a game look good by itself. I’d be totally cool with even 1080p 60-120fps if it meant we got an insane groundbreaking visual or gameplay experience.

I also agree with you on the Halo 5 maps. But beyond just being designed around the movement system they just felt bland. Many maps looked like remixed versions of other maps, many were very flat looking or forge creations. The breakout maps in general were hard to look at. Like many classic Halo maps were functional and had personality. I realize that isnt easy especially with a 20 year old franchise. But from my experience “pro” players care more about FPS and functionality than I do and it generally results in boring maps and game types and rules imo.

Samsung, LG, Sony, … should sell more TV’s with HDMI 2.1. There are only few models with true 2.1. Imo that’s a problem because some functions won’t work without it.

well all the more reason to focus on making the game as good as you can and forget about the HDMI 2.1 features until its more standard. higher FPS and resolutions can be patched in later…

All those brands are confirmed to be shipping out more TVs with HDMI 2.1 and over 120Hz support.

So no need to panic.

However one point to note is that in order to achieve 120 FPS on console the graphics are going to look awful in comparison to other games. And that’s stating it lightly.

Finding a semi-cheap 4k tv with 120hz in australia is nigh impossible lmao, especially one with good quailty… Hopefully as these new consoles come out, Tv manufactures start listening to demand and produce those types of tvs for a more wide spread audience at a more accessible price point. cause 3000+ aud for a 120hz 4k is crazy.

They will become cheaper as demand rises.

Professional gaming has always ruined great franchises. Just look at Rainbow Six as an example.

I think 5v5 can handle 4k 120fps. It’s big team battle I worry about.

Probably not in Australia. Shipping / import duties / taxes / relatively small market… we don’t tend to get a lot of benefit.

This is why I play PC. Computer monitors are more affordable. With the exception of gaming desktops lol.
