Multiplayer changes for H4

After a few months off, I’ve been getting back into Reach. For starters, TU was amazing and while I didn’t have a lot of complaints before I have almost none now. The wide range of gameplay available in Reach is awesome, and Anniversary Classic is great for a nostalgic guy like me.

Anyways, I am excited about the video and wanted to list a few things I hope get kept, tossed, or refined. Excuse me if any of these things have been confirmed/denied:

  • I would like to see them work the DMR into Halo 4, but make it a real DMR. Slow shots, powerful hits (maybe a 3 shot kill?), and terrifying range. But make it rather unwieldy medium-short range. It would keep the BR from being overpowered by having a niche gun that bests it in long-range shootout.

  • I hope the pistol stays relevant. One of the most overlooked aspects of Reach is how it made the pistol important again. It is a great weapon to keep on you, and I think, much like the DMR as described above, it would help balance out the BR in short range encounters.

  • I like armor abilities. I think Sprint needs to stay, as does Invisibility, but Jetpacks may need to go or be map-specific. AL can stay as long as you leave it out of some playlists. Haters gonna hate but I think AAs freshen up Halo gameplay.

  • TU bloom. I like it, I think it finally works, and maybe with a few tweaks it can be perfect. After playing older Halos I just like the feel of it better.

  • Sword follow through needs to be rethought. It is inconsistent and I can’t make any sense of it. I am tired of shooting someone and having their body continue to travel undisturbed and kill me.

  • I would like to try out some sort of melee parry system (a well-timed counter-melee gives you a brief opening to melee or shoot the attacking player). I know it might slow down kill times, but it could add some depth to close-rang battles. I am getting a little tired of both people just knocking each other out. I am probably going to get flamed for this one but I just think it could be interesting (although it would suck if poorly implemented).

  • I would really like each Halo multiplayer from here on out to be comprehensive of the previous multiplayers. This means access to all classic Halo maps - I think the people who have been playing this series from the beginning deserve to have access to those maps in each new iteration of the series. Even if they aren’t updated, as long as I can play on The Pit, Hang 'Em High, Asylum, etc., I will be happy. And I think keeping variations of the gameplay (such as Classic, types with AAs, types without) that reflect different generations of Halo gameplay would be a nice tribute as well. Each game should reinforce the fact that Halo is a legendary shooter with an amazing pedigree.

  • Custom gametype/map lobbies. I have a day job, I can’t spend my time rounding up gamers to play on my Forged maps.

  • Balance out zombie-rotation in Living Dead. You never start as a zombie more than once. Come on.

  • Get the Needler right. I think the range and effectiveness right now is good, but I don’t think it should be as powerful as it is if you don’t get the combine. Each needle does too much shield damage right now.

  • If you quit, you can’t play until the game you quit is finished, even if you restart your Xbox. If you quit frequently, you can’t play online for the rest of the day. Problem solved.

  • I promoted this on Bungie forums for a while but it never got picked up. I think there should be a 1v1 playlist with mixed gametypes. You can play it until you lose, and once you do you are locked out from that playlist for the day. I think it would be an awesome community event and would give a daily challenge for avid players.

Just some ideas. Not all of them great. Post yours below and let me know what you think of mine.

And to weigh in on the perks topic, since thats all anyone here seems to want to talk about, I hope its kept to AA type loadouts. I don’t want to see custom classes because it makes the mixture of “perks” to unwieldy. I think the AAs from Reach are good, and maybe toying around with a few new features such as reload time or melee speed, etc., might make for a deeper experience.

Honestly, people need to calm down about it. Perks are a good gameplay idea. Just because COD uses them doesn’t mean Halo will turn into COD. For Halo to keep a fan base they need to keep trying new things, while giving access to the past (which they do with all the different playlist variations).
