> Halo is for everyone. We can confirm #HaloInfinite multiplayer will be free-to-play and will support 120FPS on Xbox Series X. More details will be shared later!
Everyone seems focused on the FTP and implications of micro $$$.
But what about the 120fps!
What are the implications of cross play between the Xbox One (60fps) and Series X (120fps).
And now I can look deeper into a new monitor. Was going to go 4K/60Hz but will now drop back to 1440p/120Hz. I sit right in front of the monitor so it should be more than fine. Something like the new Samsung G7; 1440p, 200Hz, HDMI2.0. 1ms.
Competitive multiplayer in PC games has never segregated people based on the refresh rate of their monitors; having 60hz and 120hz and 144hz people together in the same matches has been a thing for a long time. Figure it must not make enough of a difference to worry about.
Expect that 120fps might feel better and smoother but you’re not really going to be reacting to things faster or aiming more precisely than 60fps people do
Darwi: If it only goes 1080P for 120, I recommend the monitor I have. The ASUS VG 279 is amazing. It is so fast and smooth. It should be cheap to get. 144 on 1080P with 1M response.
I might roll with what I have and wait until there is a legit 4K/120/HDMI 2.1 monitor out there. I figure there will eventually be an update to the game to improve graphics and frame rate.
I believe in PC games when all clients have variable tick rates, the only rate that will make a huge difference is whatever rate the server updates at. If the server only updates at 60Hz, a client running at 120Hz will only be detected by the server every other tick. If the game is well optimized the clien’s game will interpolate all events like animations and projectiles at 120Hz giving the illusion that the game is buttery smooth. If you are running sub 60Hz then you are at huge disadvantage as your opponents will have more ticks to send their input and outplay you. I’m guessing that since Infinite has to be cross play with the Xbox One, the server tick rate will probably 60Hz. Maybe in a few years when support for the one is phased out 120Hz servers can be introduced.

Good point re: 1080p. Probably not safe to automatically assume 1440p for Halo multiplayer.
But a lot of games will be at 4K (and the Halo campaign)… and a 1440p monitor would add a lot of DPI over a 1080p model.
I would imagine a “legit 4K/120/HDMI 2.1” monitor to be a tad on the expensive side (looking at multiple thousands). And my individual set up (man cave) is sitting with a monitor right in front of me… so 27 - 32 inch is probably all I need… and 4K is probably a touch of overkill (especially the 27" model).

There are already 4K144 monitors at the 27" size around the 1000$ mark. If you wait a bit, come next year there will probably be a whole lot more of them. 32" is a difficult size to find, but if you jump to 43", they are in the 1500 range currently. Depends on your budget, but it’s not as bad as one might think. And again, it’s going to get more affordable as time goes on.
I mean, if I were in this situation (and I kind of am), I’d just wait until a 4K144 monitor comes around that is in my budget and has the features I need.
I am fortunate enough to have money to spend on these things. My plan has been to get a 65 inch LG CX for movies, TV, and Infinite campaign, and something like the Eve Spectrum model 3 (If legit) or LG Ultragear for Firefight.
My fear is that I will do that and at CES ASUS or someone will announce some amazing 65 inch 4k/120/hdmi 2.1 with 1m response time coming out next summer.
What I will probably do is roll with what I have until CES. I will make sure I like the game and it has Firefight, ect. If there is nothing good from CES, I will probably go with the CX.

I don’t think we’re as blessed in Australia. Not the same range of models (it often takes 12 months or more for them to be released locally)… and we pay a premium in regards to shipping / taxes / less competitive market etc.
It is tempting to wait and see what is happening next year… but again… whatever is announced at CES takes forever to hit the local market.
I might be safer hitting up the Samsung G7 (launches here next week for AU$999)… and then wait see how the dust settles mid to late 2021. The 27" is perfect for sitting right in front of and will do well in the mancave. I just need to see it in person to check if the curved screen isn’t too distracting.
At the moment I have a BENQ 1080p 60Hz monitor which is fantastic for the Xbox One… but won’t do the Series X any justice at all.
I can then wait and see what comes out in regards to TV and update the living room a bit later.
120 fps is going to make multiplayer feel and play infinitely better. Was afraid it was going to be capped at 60 on console, but not the case I guess. Definitely will be getting a series x because of this. Off topic, do you know if we’ll be getting mouse/keyboard support?

Imagine how bad the graphics will look to allow this possibility in the first place lol…
