MP Achievements.... Grrr

Every time a new map pack comes out, we have this problem. Either the achievements are completely out of your control, or everybody is boosting and gameplay suffers. When I read the list, I thought “Oh good, play games on all the maps, that’s reasonable. And look, these achievements seem to be cumulative, rather than all in one game, maybe they’ve learned… oh, wait, what? No…” 343 should really consider the effect they have before throwing them out there, as I will explain.

First, that healing team mates with a regen shield one. I was in a game where 3 of my team mates were waiting in the back, shooting each other then running in to each others’ regen fields. Clever, but half my team was busy, so we suffered a horrible defeat.

Then there’s dissolving enemies with forerunner weapons. You may have noticed that none of the maps have forerunner weapons on them, so you can only get this through personal ordnance. (Pulse grenades are useless so don’t count). First, this requires some luck. In all the games yesterday, I wasn’t offered any forerunner weapons, which put me at a major disadvantage. Luckily, my fortune seemed to change today, but there is still the issue that luck is a major factor in getting this achievement. However, the greatest problem is that the only game mode you can call personal ordnance in is infinity slayer. That means this is usually chosen over all other game types, so I rarely get to play objective, which is such a shame.

Now on to the worst of the bunch, assassinating a player using a hardlight shield. Now, if nobody on the enemy team is using a shield, then this achievement is impossible. Not difficult, not something you can work towards, IMPOSSIBLE. There is nothing you can do, there is nothing your team can do, it is entirely dependent on an enemy player choosing to use a particular ability, which is rarely seen anyway. In fact the first time I saw a hardlight shield was today. I noticed they were also staying still, and let me assassinate them for the achievement. I sent them a “thank you” message, and have been using a shield in my recent games, trying to pay the favour forward. PLEASE, EVERYONE should learn from this. Try to use a hard light shield more, and maybe even let someone get the achievement. You never know, it could be you on the other end one day.

And then there’s the other problems. When trying to get the splatter achievement, I would steal all my teams vehicles, including wraith and banshee, and only use them for splatters. The whole team suffered, and I don’t care, it’s the only thing I can do to get 343 to acknowledge their mistake.

Oh, and of course we can only get these achievements while this playlist is active, because I sure as hell won’t be seeing them in other playlist due to the abysmal DLC integration. It’s OK, it’s not like this has been an issue for 3 games.

Urgh… rant over. Please, 343, when you design achievements, think how a game full of people focusing on nothing but obtaining them would look.

I would have no problem with them whatshoever if they weren’t map-pack specific. I mean, once the playlist goes away it’s nearly impossible to get them without boosting (Crimson…).

I feel some should just be special medals instead of achievements, you can’t really say you “ACHIEVED” anything when it was based on luck. I for one have seen hard light shield maybe 5 times since Halo 4 released. I got all achievements that came on disc. However now I’m stuck with yet another incomplete game, because of luck based achievements.

Exactly. The best Halo 4 player in the world could play for an entire day going for this achievement, see nobody using a hard light shield (not a stretch of the imagination) and he would be unable to get it. Then in the next game, somebody could pick up a controller for the first time, bump in to somebody with a shield up, and get it. It’s entirely out of your control.

Also, actually have come close 2 x w/ hard light shield one 1st when someone picked him off from behind as I came up on him/her another was a splatter/betrayal as i was running up on him. It was like your ice-cream fell off the cone and slid sown the hot pavement with not so much as a bite taken out of it. Probably wont get that close again.

I would much prefer to see more campaign or Spartan-Ops achievements added w/ each map pack. I would love the opportunity to go back and replay the campaign in different ways like Halo 3 and ODST’s vidmaster achievements. So much more fun and satisfying to complete than playing 100+ matches on the DLC maps and never getting the opportunity to get the achievements b/c they require some specific situation to occur.

Yes! The vid masters were so much fun, way more than I expected. I did so many Iron runs, and I still enjoyed it every time.

I’m not entirely against MP achievements, as long as they are reasonable. The “play games on all maps” was a good example, maybe an additional achievement for winning on the maps could have worked. I would have no problem hearing “Come on guys, win so i can get this achievement!”. 343 should consider the following when devising MP achievements:

  • It should not require a specific situation that requires an enemy’s participation
  • Attempting to get it should not negatively impact the experience of your team (or any players really)
  • It should be realistically obtainable at any time in the future

Getting a game on a crimson map is one thing.
Beating everyone else to the Mantis is another.
Not getting EMP’d (by enemies and teammates alike) is another another!

I have completed 75 of 76 achievements to date. I have attained each one legitimately in matchmaking with the exception of BIRD OF PREY (which I attained in a custom match on SKYLINE).

The only achievement I do not currently have is: THAT WON’T SAVE YOU (Assassinate an enemy while using a hard light shield).

I think these 2 (Bird of Prey and That Won’t Save You) are the only 2 of the 76 achievements that require a LOT of LUCK or NEED to be BOOSTED. Bird of Prey can be done in a custom match on Otherwise these are all easily “achieved” with a little dedication and “smart” play.

My suggestion:

  • Pick one or 2 that you want to attain at a time and focus your efforts on these
  • You MAY have to sacrifice some better team play and/or your K/D to get these.
  • Adjust your loadouts to help you attain what you are currently trying to achieve. For example:
    o Scrapyard (Destroy 2 Vehicles in 1 matchmade game on Castle Map) – Try BR, Plasma Pistol, Grenadier, Explosives
    o Outta my Way (Splatter 5 enemies in 1 matchmade game on Castle Map) - Try using Wheelman as your tactical package.

I still need the obvious HLS assassination one, but the other I need is five melees in one match. I just can’t get this one unless I seriously try for it. lol

Melee kills on big maps where DMRs reign supreme. Okay, not that hard, but really? Who’s bright idea was that?

I really love it when a Crimson map FINALLY comes up and then 12 people vote for Ragnarok.

You know, because we haven’t had the chance the play that map for 6 years or something like that.
