I’ve been playing the Infinite flight with a few of my friends over the weekend, and one of the complaints which has come up with us is the motion tracker.
We all feel that the range is either too short, or the system is inconsistent. There are points where I see enemies I would expect to be visible on the tracker present, but many a time I’ve also felt like a person who was even closer should have been marked but wasn’t.
Anybody else feeling this way? If you do, then we should try to get this flagged in hope of the required changes to be made for us to ensure we get the right motion tracker set up for the Halo community.

I do agree with that. I would also say that it was disappointing not to see dual weilding make a return and some other things like weapons not spawning on the ground.
yes, many times i get butt rushed and had no idea they were coming and i’ve done the same to others just as easily.
I think it should get at least maybe 2 more meters and a similar thing to how it displays friendlies outside of the range but only up to 25m with enemies.

Yes, we were feeling the same where we would have no idea we’re getting rushed from behind and essentially would have repetitive deaths in this manner.
I’m not sure if maybe this is due to spawning cycles that they keep approaching from behind, but it was a very common death which we suffered.

I like the Halo reach radar thingy, it was great telling you if they were above below or kn your level and had a good range.

I think the first version of the motion tracker was not ideal given the usual one we would expect, although I did not have problems with it as I am with the newly updated (more classic) version.
I do feel like it’s important range is increased to allow for more awareness. As I mentioned in previous comments, my friends and I continued to suffer quite repetitive deaths where we would be gunned from behind without even a moment to be able to realise someone’s even there from the tracker.

It is interesting to me that only in Halo games I have seen ‘being killed from behind’ mentioned as a problem.
In other FPS games, it just normal and part of the game. You avoid it by proper positioning and awareness. There is a risk and reward system in exposing yourself.
My issue with the radar is that it incentives pre-emptive grenade spam whilst slowing down the game. It does not also benefit the new players, and it is used against them on social playlists. Increasing the range will make all those behaviours even worse.

Well in other games you have game sound liek footsteps to hear if people are behind you

I don’t actually feel like this is something common in Halo though. Being a massive fan myself and playing since Halo CE, I just feel like your motion tracker is your best buddy in matchmaking giving you visibility of threats, and even helping you decide how to go about your own movement to avoid encounters if you need to wait for shields to regen.
Of course, being killed from behind is part of the game and I can accept it, but my argument is that having a larger range would reduce how often this happens if players are able to react to the danger which approaches them.
Regarding pre-nading, I highly doubt that the motion tracker is causing this to take place given the point I am making of it being too short ranged and inconsistent at times (or I feel it is inconsistent at least).
I hope regardless of opinion, an improvement to the system can be made to better the experience of the players and reduce the surprise attack which is commonly experienced.
Agreed, so many times they were in the range of the older trackers and not crouching or in camo, and nothing. Even when I’m dancing with them for the beatdown, for some ninja times, close up and the same non-crouching, nothing.

Thanks for the reply NoobAssassin86.
Just hoping that this is something felt across the community so 343i can look into it further and refine the current state.

Many classic FPS multiplayer games did not have any footsteps, the only sound being the weapon sounds.
Also, I am constantly hearing footsteps in Halo Infinite, and I am using that to locate the enemies.

Because Halo’s always been more about the encounters themselves than positioning. A lot of shooters you get high ground or first sight of an enemy and their odds are slim. In Halo you can turn the table on almost any attack if you out dance your opponent. It feels weird getting killed from behind because we’re used to at least getting a chance to shoot back at an attack. I hear you but I also feel this is essential in keeping Halo distinct from CoD and the like

This is pretty much the entire point of Halo. Without the effective chance to defend yourself with that “dance”, it simply isn’t Halo to me. It’s one of the original core tenants and 343 has stated they wanted to reinforce that. Motion tracker simply helps you get into those encounters and have as equal a chance as possible going into that dance, so that the best player wins, equipment being equal of course. And quite frankly, I find it very ineffective in Infinite. The lack of clear height indicators as seen before disoriented me and arguably put me in a worse position going into a fight, and the range combined really make it somewhat “eh” to me.

But since the ranked modes are not using the same motion tracker you can’t really say that the motion tracker is what makes this game Halo. These legacy motion tracker settings only apply to one half of the multiplayer modes.
Halo games have enough unique features to remain distinct from other FPS games without the motion tracker.

Isn’t that a recent thing though? Could be why many legacy fans have turned off with 4/5.
To me SWAT is like what you’re describing and that’s exactly why I don’t play it much. Meanwhile my buddies who go between a lot popular of shooters love it.
I haven’t noticed any issues with the radar but I don’t really rely on it, it’s more of a nice-to-have than a crucial part of the HUD for me. As for it’s range, I think it’s fine but does seem a bit short. I wouldn’t mind a meter or two extra radar range.
