Most underrated character?

Tartarus is one of my favorite characters, and yet I feel like I rarely see people talk about him. It’s something about his dialogue and presence that make me enjoy his character so much.

I feel like brutes in general are downplayed as dumb…well brutes. But I feel like pretty much all portayals show them as fairly normal. Yes they can be aggressive but their body is pretty much designed for it.

Tartarus not just going along with Arbiter/Spark’s story makes sense. They’re already the enemy, them having a lightbulb say some words isn’t terribly convincing for someone who’s had a faith drilled into their head their whole lives, and that his people’s rise to power (over the elites who abused them) was built on it as well… We know Tartatus already didn’t exactly revere spark, given his handling of him earlier in the campaign.

I doubt the Elites would have been as willing to ‘see the truth’ either if the covenant hadn’t suddenly turned on then. We already see this even in Ghosts of Onyx, where Xytan’s guys are turning on the prophets but otherwise arent changing their ways.

I think Yayap doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. He was cunning, had a knack for survival, and pointed a Plasma Pistol at a superiors face in defiance.

Fred-104. Easily. It’s just wrong that he has to appear in only one game, and one with a mediocre story at that. He needs his own franchise.

I feel like Rtas 'Vadum is a missed opportunity

Personally I see him get a lot of love from the community

Here’s my interpretation of Tartarus’s immense faith in the prophets.

even though he may never say it out loud, I think Tartarus really admires the elites and Arbiter and the roles that they have in the Covenant. Even in the games’ canon the brutes are seen as dumb creatures, and I think Tartarus really cared for the well-being of his race. He wanted the brutes to thrive, to be like the elites that (I think) he admires. That’s why when Spark tells him about the true purpose of Halo, even though Tartarus shows a level of realization of Halo’s true purpose, he still grows through with the prophets plan because he thinks there is no other way to make the Brutes great, and because in the success of the elites Arbiter had become sort of a rival to Tartarus.

Sure, most people would chalk up his actions in Halo 2 to him being just dumb, but I find that a closer look at him reveals that there is more to his character than him being another stereotypically idiotic brute

Yayap is undoubtedly in my mind so underrated. He deserves so much more!

It’s hard to find an underrated character because almost every character has some level of cult following aside from the standouts. The first one to pop in my head was Vasily “Vaz” Beloi.

He had one of the most interested character arcs of anyone in the Halo franchise, but he had the unfortunate luck of being in the Kilo Five trilogy. Given its unpopularity among many fans, most of the characters in that trilogy have been either forgotten or discounted.

This is a pretty good take, Tartarus wasnt religious but he was very political and in that regard the prophets had built him and delivered to him everything he had wanted so long he paid allegiance. Asking him to admit defeat to the arbiter without a fight wasnt likely ever going to be an option in his mind even if the arbiter was really just asking for a truce in deescalation.

Generally speaking: Miranda Keyes.
I just often feel like the brilliance of this character often gets forgotten in the shadow of other characters like Johnson and Arby and such, but I think she’s in their league as a character.
Honestly her death scene brakes me. Johnson: ”Do it, me then you”. But she hesitates, And the pain in Johnsons eyes, oof.

Another one that’s really unappreciated is Jenkins. This guy was literally infected by flood. He suffered so much, imagine keeping most of your sanity but going through the flood transformation and being completely aware of it. It must have been agony for the poor man yet he fought the flood inside him and at times was able to regain control for a short time. He even was able to help bring down the truth and reconciliation which if it had escaped would have lead the flood off the halo ring. Jenkins really is an unsung hero.
