im not sure if this is in the right spot, so if its not, my apologies.
i was looking into buying a bunch of halo books and would like to know which ones are a must read for a big fan. ive read bits and pieces from friends copies but dunno which i read and am now going to buy most of them to read from mostly beginning to end.
i would like to know which ones are the best that deal with the covies. i love the covie storylines and would like to not waste my money on books that arent as great or are of the new trilogy.
will you kindly inform me as a halo fan which ones are worth the cash?
Well i would recommend the greg Bear Forerunner series as it has a nice setting of the universe and also the karen traviss books that tie halo 3 and 4 together.
Also would recommend First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx as i think they are essential for the Halo universe
• the fall of reach is the most essential, it has nothing to do with the game so don’t make playing the reach game stop you from reason it.
it tells you all about the Spartan program and johns story for child to halo 1
• first strike
• ghosts of onyx
And the forerunner saga by Greg bear
The Karen traviss books are good but alot harder to get into than previous books. It might just be that I hate her writing though.
Halo: Contact Harvest delves into the life of Sgt. Maj. Johnson, but also gives a better understanding of the three Prophets Truth, Mercy and Regret. Tartarus, Macabeus, and Dadab are also Covenant characters that I enjoyed reading about.
If you want a better understanding of the Spartan program, The Fall of Reach is a must have. It covers a wide variety of instances in the Halo universe.
cool thanks for the help. im planning on trying the forerunner series after i go through the covie books since aliens = awesome and since i played the first few games without any of the books since i was a poor kid lol. i was happy enough just to nave the game and now that i can afford the books i plan on thoroughly enjoying them.

Fall of Reach is important in terms of the whole Spartan program back-story. For Covies I would recommend Evolutions as there’s some Elite related stories in there. Also, Contact Harvest if you’re interested in Grunts/Engineers. I have all the books, so any questions, just ask.

cool thank you kind sir.
i would like to know as much as i can about the human covie war and the covies in general so any books that deal with that i hope to read first.
i heard the flood was a waste as it was based off ce but i dunno, is there anything in there worthwhile?
i am lovin what others have said about ghosts of onyx and what not so im uber excited.
The Flood book goes into slightly more depth than CE like how Cpt Keyes was captured and the rest of the humans on the halo but its probably the last one id get if i were you just because you know the gist of the story wereas all the other bookjs will be new info

> 1. I would recommend Contact Harvest for this as it explains why the Covenant want to wipe out humanity (it’s all to do with the scheming Prophets but I won’t say anymore).
> 2. The Flood expands the game nicely with some extra UNSC characters, but yes, there isn’t mush more info outside of the events of Halo: CE.

Keep in mind that there’s a chronological order for these books, so if you pick up Ghosts of Onyx before reading Fall of Reach and First Strike, there will be things you won’t understand, like who the characters are.
My reading order:
Fall of Reach - MUST READ First Strike Ghosts of Onyx
*These cover the events between Halo 3 and 4. Told from both Human/Elite perspective. Ties into some things that happen in Spartan Ops. Need to read Ghosts of Onyx before reading these. Glasslands The Thursday War
-there will be a sequel to The Thursday War, but no info about it has been released.
*These concern only Forerunner and Humans from 100,000 years ago, so no Covenant. But very much relates to Halo 4 with backstory on the Didact and the Librarian, as well as Guilty Spark, and the creation of the Ark and the Halo array. Cryptum Primordium Silentium - comes out in March
Evolutions also contains a lot of short stories that focus on Covenant as well.

awesome thanks for the details on all of it.
thanks a lot for all the help Spartans! i greatly appreciate it!
The Cole Protocol is a pretty good, in my opinion, Covenant/Insurrectionist book set during the middle of the Human-Covenant War. So if you like that sort of thing, you might like it. A lot of people don’t like it as much. But yeah, the essentials are, in this order:
Fall of Reach - Pre-Halo CE
First Strike - Bridges Halo CE/Fall of Reach and Halo 2
Ghosts of Onyx - Very important side battles going on during Halo 2 and 3, expands the scope of the universe
Glasslands - continues Ghosts of Onyx and starts setting up Halo 4, is post Halo 3.
Thursday War - continues Glasslands, sets up Halo 4.
and then the Forerunner Trilogy, which is Cryptum and Primordial at this moment only.
I was bored and clicked on this thread to see what people had to say… I have now read the first 4 chapters of The Fall of Reach and I am hooked! Thank you OP for asking and thank you to everyone else that replied!
The Fall of Reach
The Flood (i know it’s just a novelization of Halo: CE, but it does expand the story really well)
First Strike
Ghosts of Onyx
Glasslands
Thursday War
