After the new “social” playlist came out, people started complaining that this playlist still didn’t feel social at all. I agree, but I believe there is a different reason Halo 5 is struggling to achieve that counterpart to its awesome competitive experience.
The maps are too small and enclosed.
Although this layout is pretty important for the new mechanics in Halo and it surely adds for a more fast paced competitive feel (which is what 343 was aiming for and did very successfully), none of the maps allow for that much time and space compared to previous titles.
Don’t believe me? Go back to older Halo games and just compare the sizes. Look at The Pit, look at Narrows, look at pretty much every map out there. No, they weren’t all humongous, but they varied in size, and that is what Halo is missing right now - variation.
This is why I believe 343 should either implement into all rotations or just social to start out more open area maps with a large center for carnage and more time to stay alive (possibly). I think it would add to the social aspect as well as bring a possibly refreshing scene to its competitive aspects as well. They should at least test it out with possible forge maps created by the community. I would love to see a remake of The Pit in their social playlists. It doesn’t have to even be in their ranked playlists since they most likely want to keep to its core competitive mechanics.
Overall I believe we need a higher variation in map sizes for arena modes. I encourage bigger size arena maps, but still believe the smaller ones are more suitable for competition thus feel 343 should experiment with their new social playlist.
I personally don’t like very open maps. It’s just BR BR BR DMR SNIPER BR BR. And personally that gets boring really fast (funny that coming from a SWAT player but still) .
Not sure about the “more time to stay alive” part as I like endless carnage, but I do agree that a bit of variety would be nice. Orion was a bit more open, but they took that away and it has not been seen since!

I don’t believe it is fine. I believe they are too similar. We need the variation and this is an easy way to implement it.
As for looks, you honestly might not realize this but even a larger scale arena map allows for more things to look at and it also allows for greater variation in design. (I think the color schemes are well varied though which is nice. Not really my point though).

Im so glad someone else noticed. I really like the gameplay, but i dont like the maps at all. They seem generic to me. Still, that is all that is available so i will continue to play.

Halo 4 had some god awful oversized 4v4 maps. I don’t want to go back to that because it lead to stale gameplay. The small maps that aren’t open play chaoticly, which is why it is fine. With some know how you and your team can contain that chaos and win. I would like to see a good asymetrical map come into H5 something like High Ground, Guardian, Lockout, or even Boardwalk. Obviously, not exact replicas but something to make the battlefield seem less like a square.

Well, if these maps were simply on a social playlist where you don’t spawn with those, you can limit the amount of precision weapons on the map. But I do agree with you, especially with how quickly you die. I still think they should test it out on their social playlist. We really need a successful one in my opinion.

Boardwalk was a great map! Even something with a size like that is fine! Sure Halo 5 might not be suitable for a big scale smallish btb map like last resort, but I think boardwalk would make a great map to try out on a social playlist?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t not like the maps we have, I just believe they are getting repetitive.
If I were to compare it to another game, I instantly think of Modern Warfare 3. To be quite honest, the lack of map variation is what ruined the multiplayer for me. Every single map was corridor based with no center.
I feel this is the direction Halo 5 is heading. Every new arena map feels the same, and that is why people are never truly impressed with the updated arena maps. Yeah remixes dont really count but for the true new ones, they don’t feel THAT refreshing. Its fine if 343 wants to keep making competitive maps, but they should give forgers a chance to create more open maps to implement in their social playlists. Just as an experiment
ATM almost all of the maps both look and play the same. We really do need some bigger, more open maps that aren’t just a small set of metal corridors with a pretty skybox

Thats the idea, Variety. It just adds to player retention
The reason the maps are so small is the game play revolves around ar/pistol, get any bigger and 343’s vision won’t work. I prefer the classic maps over these generic ones but I also prefer BR starts which no one else does.
