I’ve had problems with lag since the day Halo 5 was released and it’s only getting worse. Symptoms include, but not limited to, players glitching across the screen and shots failing to register.
I’ve dug through other posts on Waypoint and they all seem to reference either Time Warner or international servers. This is a different issue. I use Comcast in Atlanta, GA, USA.
I have a Motorola SB6141 modem and Archer C9 router wired directly to the Xbox with a CAT7 cable. My NAT is open. My MTU is set properly. I get a consistent 30 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, with 20 ms ping according to speedtest.net and 80-85 ms ping to Xbox. I have a 1 month old Samsung 40" Series 5 TV set to game mode.
When the game was released, most matches had odd lag problems throughout, but were clean enough to be playable and fun. At least 1 in 20 matches I even got to experience the satisfaction of most shots landing where I pointed them and nobody moving in ways they shouldn’t. Only occasional matches would have lag bad enough that I’d want to quit. I looked forward to updates hoping that improvements would reduce the questionable matches and eliminate the few unplayable ones. Each update has disappointed me by instead making the problem more pervasive with more matches reaching or approaching unplayable.
I was ecstatic about the promise that Hammer Storm would definitely include a fix for some lag problems. The fix did not help me at all. It made the problem much, much worse. Since Hammer Storm was released, I have not been able to get a single game that felt playable at all.
I used to use tactics and flanks to provide the opportunity to get ahead of poor shot registration. If a few extra shots weren’t enough, I could at least push in close and finish with a melee for, at worst, a trade. Since Hammer Storm, even landing a melee is nearly impossible. A player right in front of me somehow miraculously ends up not getting punched even if inches away at the center of the screen. My screen might show 2 perfectly placed grenades and an entire clip emptied into an opponent’s face and I’m lucky if I even manage to pop the shields. I can’t even move around the map properly anymore without getting stuck on a random piece of geometry or missing what should be an easy jump.
During Pre-season, I got up to Diamond on most playlists. By February I could not climb above Platinum 2 for more than 1 game in a row even if playing with a full team. Now, I’m getting absolutely and completely demolished by gold players. With each update the problem has gone from annoying to frustrating and now to complete hopelessness.
