More Grenades to come

There is a blink and you’ll miss it moment, that happens in the Halo Infinite Multiplayer Overview Vidoc. Where a press ‘x’ to pick up spike grenade prompt appears on the hud. Now the ramification of this is that we may be getting more than 4 grenade types! I suspect we are going to have 2 grenade slots, but we now have the capacity to drop and switch out which grenade types we have in our inventory. The benefit of this is that we can now have as many grenade types as we want, and this makes me very happy.

This is actually something I have been hoping we’ll get for a long time. I even made a post on this very topic 7 years ago. Not that I think 343 are copying my ideas.

What are your Opinions? What new grenade types do you think we will get at launch? I suspect one is a lightning grenade. With Halo Infinite having a 10-year plan there may be an opportunity to add new grenade types, so post your ideas!

Smoke grenade.

Flash grenade (temporary vision impairment to anyone looking at it).

Stun grenade. Slower movement. Also takes out radar and audio / communication for a few seconds.

And lastly a bit out of left field… A tag grenade that allows us to set up custom games of grenade tag. Something like if you take 50% of damage you’re now ‘it’

I hope some grenades have a “power weapon” treatment especially if they have a wide AOE. I would like a zero gravity grenade so it can be used for traversal and such.

I hope we see the return of the Halo 3 incendiary grenade, was an absolute beast.

Cool ideas but I can see smoke flares being an equipment. The trilogy of gun, nade and melee are all offensive abilities.
I expect that nades will have an electrical alternative to the flame nade. Considering the comments on damage types from a while back.
Still expecting to see prometheans reworked and I expect electrical damage to be the best way of taking them down.

Nice find. That is pretty cool that we will be able to choose which nades to hold instead of having to throw your current nades to pick up the ones you want or just having 100 nades on you which is broken.

the last time they got really creative with grenades was probably in halo 3 when they added multiple different types for both covanent and spartans

Well, that’s the thing, since they will be map pick-ups, they don’t exactly need to be perfectly balanced. There could certainly be a hierarchy of more desirable grenade types, to fight over and pick up. A zero gravity grenade sounds pretty cool. I could imagine it causing enemies to float and drift awkwardly suspended in an area of effect and then doubling as a mobility tool. But I do wonder if 343 will focus on lethal/ damaging grenade types.

If Fire is an unrevealed damage type to feature in Halo Infinite, I would strongly expect incendiary grenades to return. Hopefully with a big focus on its damaging area of denial effect.

I like that Spike grenade blades do damage, always thought they functioned too closely to plasma grenades, so anything that differentiates them is good in my book. With them doing kinetic damage now as well, I think they will have their own individual identity.

It’s a shame we haven’t had anything new in the last several years grenade-wise. At least Infinite looks to be shaking it up a bit.

Yeah, I think if there was a grenade slot for every grenade type, any more than 4 would be broken. Grenade swapping opens the doors to so much potential.

Yes, and equipment such as the power drain and trip mine almost worked like power grenades. I am looking forward to this area of the sandbox being flushed out more.

I love the possibility that over the years they end up adding more types of grenades. I’d like to see one that causes a black hole like Halo 5’s special plasma pistol.

Some sort of singularity or gravity grenade would be awesome. Just chuck it down and jump through it to give yourself low gravity for jumps and maybe avoid fall damage too.

hopefully it does

Hmmmm, that’s interesting but you have to be careful not to muddy or dilute the sandbox too much with too many different types or you’ll fine some not getting used. Perfect example is the incendiary grenade. That thing got almost no love in MP. While I like the ideas of more nades, I think they may drastically impact the sandbox and game flow.

You raise an excellent point. Why were fire bombs practically cut completely from Halo 3 multiplayer? I always assumed they were found to be unbalanced in play-testing, and maybe due to a deadline crunch there wasn’t time to fix them, so they were just cut from most of multiplayer. But I don’t have much basis for this theory.

Grenades are a ‘hidden up your sleeve’ form of attack. For a weapon pick up you can see which weapon they are holding. This is not true for grenades and it could cause some balancing issues. There is no real way to recognise whether someone has a plasma grenade to stick you with till they throw it. A practically instant melt your face off fire grenade is probably over powered in this context. I think the fire bomb would need a bit of a rework before returning. Hopefully there are some good visual and audible cues, that indicate as quickly as possible what type of grenade is being thrown, for a start.

I do agree there probably shouldn’t be too many grenades, and the ones that are included should be carefully considered.

While I haven’t played halo long enough to have a well thought-out opinion (Halo 2: Project Cartographer, MCC Reach) I have been following Halo Infinite and reading random things on the wiki. I would like to see a return of CE’s grenade chains, the concept itself sounds hillarious and I feel that it could make for some tactical plays if they could also implement harmlessly dropping grenades on the floor like how I heard that you could drop weapons without swapping them. Imagine dropping two frags on the floor and sniping the pile when an unfortunate victim walks by.
