more competitive = less fun

I don’t mind playing competitive at all and my team and I can hold our own most of the time but I feel like the competitiveness is starting to become a little ridiculous and out of hand. I feel like no matter what playlist you go into social, ranked or warzone, its like playing against pro’s every single time and you can’t have fun. I recently had some friends finally get onto the H5 wave and were excited about the game but almost all of the social playlists felt like ranked matches and they were getting destroyed and discouraged from playing. even social playlist having the same pace as ranked matches, is this the new norm?

thoughts???

Removing ranks for social playlists lets the pros destroy new players? Who knew. I never understood the hype about social playlists that had a ranked equivalent.

We’ll never have true Social in modern gaming these days. Tryhards will go to it to pubstomp and pad their K/D’s and regardless of whether or not hidden ranks exist in a Social playlist in any game it’s rarely going to end up as a truly noncompetitive match. Combine that with Smurfs and even more Tryhards in Ranked and it becomes difficult to play any multiplayer in any game these days.

halo community just needs to realise that playlists with no skill based matchmaking are a terrible idea. unranked yes, no real matchmaking? no!

I can see why competitive games can become less fun; it mores more routine than entertaining.

Would you prefer that they didn’t try and win? I don’t understand the issue here. They want to win, so they are going to play their hardest to win.

Well, first it seems that the majority of people looking to play “social” playlists are really just looking to play against others of lower skill level. If you haven’t figured it out by now… that is just not going to happen most of the time, nor should it. Think about it; if your rank is no longer taken into account for social, naturally, the matches would probably be more lopsided most of the time. If you aren’t in the upper echelon in terms of Halo skill, the majority of social matches will probably not be great fun for you.

Second, I think the fact that your friends may not particularly enjoy the competitive side of Halo says more about their personality than it does about shortcomings of the game. That is not a knock, by the way. Some just don’t play video games to stress out and get sweaty, but to just lay back and have fun. For the majority of the gaming community, Halo is NOT the game to do that with. Halo has a steep learning curve, and doesn’t offer much to the casual player who doesn’t necessarily want to take the time to develop as a player.

Unfortunately for you, wanting to play with friends, Halo just might not be the game for them. Overwatch does a pretty good job of pleasing both casual players and competitive players. That may be the one for you guys to get into.

I have to say, competitive doesn’t =blowouts, that’s called terrible matchmaking and parameters. Competitive games are generally close, not lopsided blowouts or people “tryharding”.

I honestly don’t understand people’s issues with h5s false impressions of being a competitive game when so much of its settings and such really do the opposite lol. When sports teams blow out other teams 50-10 you don’t see them saying it was Competitive cuz it wasn’t even close. Same applies to halo, why do so many people think blowouts mean the game is to competitive? You just show a lack of understanding. If halo 5 was actually competitive you’d see constant games being neck to neck consistently. So again, h5 has a false impression of being competitive because it’s matchmaking and parameters are messed up.

The fun playlist to me are heroic warzone firefight, mythic fiesta, action sack, and use the custom game browser for different games, fiesta castle wars is fun, fiesta in that dorm room map is fun, or host your own game.

So you want me to go around losing my battles on purpose? Dont blame me for actually trying and helping my team, blame the gameplay of Halo 5, being so competitive.

If the game is no longer fun for people, stop playing. This is a video game.

I love playing Halo. Sure, some matches are super competitive in social… It happens. But then some are just eh. I still have fun. That’s the point in playing video games. To have fun… At least for me it is.

I didn’t know that true skill or CSR somehow if factored in when playing social matches.

This is not Halo 5 thing. This is a Halo thing. It always was and it always will be.

My suggestion is to start your friends out first with Infection, Griffball, and Action Sack. So they can see the fun, goofy side of Halo. You can’t just drop them in BTB or Team Skirmish expecting them to have weapon timers and map knowledge down immediately. That’s just setting them up for failure. Yes they’re “social” game modes, but it doesn’t mean that others aren’t playing to win. WZ FF is another good place to wean them into the game. Also Custom games are another good place to start with. You can play between yourselves and not have to deal with others above their skill level.

I think if you go find custom games in the custom browser, you’ll find some social games or social players. Host some custom games with your crew and you’ll have some fun.

That’s what I did for a while. Even if it was just the 4 of us, we had no problem playing 2v2 or 1v2 (I call being alone) snipes.

Couldnt have said it better myself

I’m of the mindset that if I want to play to win, I’ll go into ranked. The majority of the time once you’ve played 20+ games in a playlist it is pretty darn balanced. If I don’t want to be ‘competitive’ i.e. just looking to screw around and have fun, I go into social or warzone with no expectation of winning. I might get matched up against a fireteam of champions in Social Skirmish or I might end up playing against bronze players.

Stats are just stats - this is a game and a pretty good game to boot. Whether you’re casual or competitive, there’s options for you. I do realize that if you’re absolutely terrible at the game, you might not have as much fun, but that’s the same with everything in life.

Not if they continue to have the “If I can’t win, victim me” mentality that the world seems to have nowadays.
