Hey there guys.
This is the first thread I ever opened in the Halo forums I guess but this is something that is bothering me since Halo 2 actually and it keeps increasing since Halo 4. Remeber Halo:CE where you get on a warthog or a scorpion and still have 1st person view? That feeling really riding it, really sitting on that thing. Holy moly I remember sitting in the warthog on the passenger seat jumping that huge jump in the Maw. That feeling was so damn awesome but since Halo 2 they’re doing this weird 3rd person thing. I know it gives you more “all around”-view of the area but in my opinion it draws you out of the actual action.
And since Halo 4 it get’s more and more zooming out:
Vehicles, doesn’t matter which seat - 3rd person (driving though, I never had a problem with that, I always thought the vehicle stearing in Halo was awesome)
Using the thrusters - 3rd person (for 1 seconds which I think is so unnecessary and annoying)
Using the shield - 3rd person (depending on how long you press the button… sometimes just a blink…)
Using a turret - 3rd person
Carrying a turret - 3rd person (which is a neat feature, just summing up)
Spawning this fancy flying turret - 3rd person (unnecessary)
Assassinations - 3rd person (I get it… for the optics.)
and it keeps increasing now with the upcomming new abilities and what you see in the trailers and what you had in the beta:
Spartan charge - 3rd person (not while running though… why would you make that 3rd person? Even when you break through the walls like in the gameplay trailer. I would love to get that wall right up in my face while breaking through seriously)
Groundpound - 3rd person (BUT WAIT - not while charging)
Thumps up on removing 3rd person while using thrusters since they’re going to be used more I guess (but of course none of the ones I just wrote)
I really really do like the direction 343 goes with Halo, I really do. But I just don’t like these types of things. In no game. It’s annoying and disorientational in my opinion. It doesn’t even look fancy, when the camera zooms out for not even a few seconds. But there’s nothing really what you can do about it. No settings changing, no camera options an what you like or not. There might be enough people out there who like that but I personally don’t and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone with this thought.
What do you guys think?
Thx for your opinions
-I like it when carrying the turret.
-I hated it with thrusters, so glad it’s gone.
-I don’t like it with Spartan charge. It was disorienting in the beta, though that may have been for balance issues to not make it too over-powered by allowing the player you hit a chance to hit you back while you’re pulling back into first person mode.
-I also like it for assassinations. There are plenty of games (like Far Cry) that have 1st person assassinations, and I really like Halo’s 3rd person. You can spin the camera around too, making it pretty interesting.
-I wouldn’t mind an option for first person driving, though. That could be neat.
-And it looks really cool while ground pounding, but it may be even cooler in 1st person. I really want to see that actually.
So I agree with you on a lot of these, but not all.
As an option I wpuld agree, but only an option because 3rd person sight gives so many advantages. Maybe yo mess around with for immersion, but if there werent 3rd persona assasinations, you physically couldnt recover, someone would be standing right behind you waiting for you to finish, and boom. Done.
I don’t really mind 3rd person view.
That’s why I said I get it for the assassinations. 3rd person is an advantage, no doubt about that. But if it’s nessecessary, that is another thing. And in my opinion it would feel more direct if it was first person. Because with 3rd you get the overview and everything but you get kind of pulled out of the action.
The turret thing was not something that really bothered me. Having the overall view is pretty cool and how you carry it, looks neat. But I feel in general, especially for the campaign you should feel like you’re the protagonist. And when the camera zoom’s out it sometimes pulls me out of the action kind of loosens the connection to the character a bit.

But that’s why you have a radar right? I mean even while the assassination in 3rd person you wouldn’t be able to do something against someone who’s just waiting for the kill. Doesn’t matter which camera you have atm.
I don’t think Halo 2 had first person vehicle views but when I played it in CE it didn’t feel right. I know it can feel better with today’s tech but there would be a gunner blocking your backside view. I agree with the other small 1 second annoyances you brought up.
I agree, definitely. I would love for Spartan Charge and Ground Pound to have an option to remain in 1st person. The only time I think it’s necessary to go into 3rd person is when driving vehicles, because when driving/piloting you’re changing perspective from controlling your character to controlling your vehicle. Because of the shift in controls, a shift in camera view makes sense.
When you’re using a Spartan ability, though, you’re still controlling your Spartan. There’s no need to go into 3rd person to show that we’re doing essentially big melee attacks, one while sprinting and one while thrusting into the ground from the air, both of which only last a brief moment. Thrusters in Halo 5 keep us in 1st person so that we can stay in the action while using the ability (which is much better than the disorienting, jarring Halo 4 3d person thruster), and I think Charge and Ground Pound should have the option to do the same.
A menu option to allow us to choose to stay in 1st person for the Spartan abilities would be great.

I totally agree with you about the driving and I personally never had a problem with that. But for the rest yes. 1st person in my opinion because as you said, you’re still controlling the spartan, so why all of a sudden zoom out.
But this thread is not big enough for them to see I guess and I don’t know how much these threads actually impact the game. Especially so shortly before the release I’m pretty sure that embedding something like that in the actual game is not possible anymore. And even if it would be a big thread would they change something because of that?
