So here’s what they’re doing:

Not enough high-rank players meant either long wait times for a match or a loosening of search restrictions and matches where onyx and champ got mixed a little too liberally with gold and platinum.
Here’s what I think will happen with the new system:
Virtually no change whatsoever. If you’re a high rank then you will obviously choose “expanded” because a) shorter wait times and b) chance to dust scrubs. Win-win. If you’re not high ranked and you’re paying attention then you will choose “focused” because you are tired of being the scrub who gets dusted. This combination creates the exact same scenario we had before where there are simply not enough high ranked players to populate high rank matches in a timely way. The lower rank “focused” players who payed attention to the change in the system may escape the ensuing loosening of search parameters, but there will still be many lower rank players who either don’t know about the change, or don’t think it affects them, and who will continue to see more than their fair share of unbalanced matches. The net result will be a few middling players who use the new system to their advantage, and the rest of matchmaking will go on largely as it did before: unbalanced and favoring superior players.
What do you think the new system will do? Who will benefit, who will not?
I honestly think it will benefit the weaker players more OR UK players because they can get the games they want (IE less American servers). Onyx+ players may choose to expand search as they are smart players and can work around lag and have the skill to compete, while also going against lower ranks should said lower ranks not change their preferences. I really think it will help in all honesty. Least I hope so. I know I’ll be switching as I’m tired of getting “dusted” by the champ/bronze combos that are exploiting the current system.
If the majority of players learn to read and actually choose to inform themselves before storming up the forums complaining about how the new system is broken because it didn’t automatically adjust for them, players should have a more enjoyable time when playing as those who don’t care about quality of connection can just get into a match finally, and those who do will be able to play quality games again. This region lock issue has affected NA as well, not nearly as badly as other places, but players seem to think here in NA everything is peachy and we don’t care about QoL. I like you, Australia, but I do not want to play against your connection.
Whatever happens, this needed to be sorted. People from day one wanted a choice of whether they wanted to be on Expanded, Balanced, and Focused. But it is already a problem. A team containing a Champ 9, 7 and 1 was put in a match with a team that wasn’t even half way to getting a rank in that playlist. It needed to be fixed, and now we have one in the next update.

I hope focused means that as a uk onyx player i will get eu only matches at mostly high diamond/onyx level. I am fed up being beaten as a onyx 1800 player in ffa by plats cos i teleport all over the shop and out of 6 headshots i get only one shot register as a bodyshot. Hopefully uk and eu players will stop being cannon fodder for NA players (not their choice) and get some fair and true tests of skill matches. And i know a lot of NA players will be happy for us if that happens cos i know deep down that the community still cares for each other. I hope it helps the Aus players too who have a truly woeful time of it in MM. With all the rubbish they put up with I dont know how 343 still has people playing the game over there. They are dedicated fans!

I’ll be happy for y’all and I do hope that’s what focused will do as well. Both bring in people in my own rank and fix any lag problems. Though I still hope to run into UK players in the early mornin hours from time to time that I’m gaming. Have had good teammates that communicate from the UK.
I get what they are saying but their description could have been clearer, matchmaking geared towards:
Balanced matchmaking
Faster matchmaking
Better connection
