I know this sounds like a stupid topic, but I want to hear the opinions of the people… So, what do you think is the proper way to say “mongoose” as a plural? some people say mongeese, some say mongooses, they both sound stupid to me, but autocorrect didn’t red underline mongooses, just mongeese, so who knows? Tell me what you think!
its mongesse.
A maggle of mongeese.
After a quick check, the major dictionaries (I checked Oxford, Merriam-Webster, Collins, and AHD) seem to agree that the preferred plural would be “mongooses”, though Merriam-Webster also seems to admit “mongeese”. With that said, unless you’re writing for someone who insists on doing things by the book, it really doesn’t matter. Mongooses, mongeese—both convery the exact same information, and therefore if clarity of communication is considered as a measuring stick, whichever form you use really doesn’t matter. Heck, as far as clarity is concerned, you could go for the singular and plural being the same like with “moose” were it not for those pesky situations where it becomes ambiguous, e.g., “the moose stopped”.
The moral of the story is: there’s no “proper” in language. There’s just what the majority uses, what the majority understands, and what the majority doesn’t understand. While the second one might get you some weird looks, the third one is the only no-no.
Mongeese
lmao, I love when these topics reemerge. Even knowing the correct pronunciation, I opt to call them mongi.
Lol, I’m going to call them Mongi from now on.
