So IGN just posted some news that Frank O Conner said that they will be using a modified Reach engine for Halo 4. The Reach engine IMO was really good graphically, but lacked in the original Halo physics.
Ugh… really? Sounds lazy to me. Each halo has had their own engine as far as I know.
as much as i wouldn’t mind the Reach engine, i would like something new in H4
every HALO game has brought new graphics, and Halo 4 should be No exception
Even though this isn’t a bad idea, I would also like something ENTIRELY new for Halo 4. So this definitely a disappointment for me. Hopefully it turns out great though.
EDIT: Well, I look like an idiot now…

Nope.avi
Halo 2 used a modified CE engine. Halo 3 used a modified Halo 2 engine. Halo Reach used a modified Halo 3 engine. It’s how it goes. If you have a good engine why would you start from scratch when you can build upon what you’ve already got?
Halo: Reach’s engine is Halo3’s modified.
Halo4 being a modified Reach means it a modified Halo3 engine but with 4-6 years more experience.

That’s strange…None of the engines look anything similar. I never would’ve guessed they’re the same with a just a few modifications.
Just because it’s based off the reach engine does mean its bad. Halo 2s was a Modified Halo CE and Halo 3 was a modified Halo 2 engine. The Reach engine is basically the Halo 3 engine but it was Rebuilt from the ground up to be more power such as double A.I. amount and 20 % faster overall speed. Clearly it would be better to use the reach engine because it’s is new and more powerful then any other and if the Halo 4 engine was redone it would only be a year more advanced then the reach while the reach engine is ten years more advanced then it’s predecessor. All the physics, textures, graphics, mechanics and weapons can be modified without have to rebuild a whole new engine and it would be a waste of time to make a new one.
Engine Does NOT equal Mechanics.

It’s not just “a few modifications”. Major overhauls take place, and in the end I doubt much of the original remains.

Actually, Halo: Reach was a modified Halo 3(: ODST?), which itself appears to have been a modified Halo 2, which in turn was probably a modified Halo 1.
You can see how drastic the changes were. Basing Halo 4 off of Reach’s engine shouldn’t inhibit their ability to improve things unless they use the same disco-and-frame-rate-prone graphics engine.
Here’s an article I came across. To clear any misunderstandings.

It shockes me that people don’t fully understand what a game engine really is.
Art style and engine apparently mean the same thing to most people.

i dont mind this, actually. it will need a lot of work, however, with things like screen lag.
that and they’ll also have to update the core game mechanics like re-implementing halo 3’s post-patch melee bleedthru system that is the most optimized melee system ever made for online halo play.
at least they’re changing it, cod is the exact same with different weapons

Wrong…
The graphics of Reach were not good. I want more good graphics for HALO 4.

I am going to have to go with this. I want a refined Halo experience. I see no sense in throwing something out that works and works well. The Reach engine(Halo Engine) is not the issue. I think some of Halo:Reach’s issues were bad decisions from the top rather than technical deficiencies.
