"Modernising" Halo has killed it

Do not create/use alternate accounts to bypass account bans.

Through reach and h4 we saw a steady decline in halo’s popularity. Now with h5 posting record low sales and falling out of the xbl most played games top 10 within a month of release it is clear that halo has been taken in the wrong direction.
The forced addition of numerous gameplay mechanics from other games have had a cancerous effect on halo.
The main effects being
-The gameplay is too complicated for casuals
-The changes have alienated fans of older halo games.
-The changes have made the gameplay uncompetitive.
Things like ADS, sprint, thruster, perks, killstreaks, burn cards, jetpacks, etc do not mess with the core halo formula and 3 games into this transformation process we are are finally seeing the full results.
Halo desperately needs a reboot. A reboot that features the master chief as the MAIN character. A reboot that stays true to halo gameplay. A halo reboot that emphasizes both casual AND competitve multiplayer.

As much as I agree, this is nothing new. People know and 343 doesn’t care, quite frankly. Make a statement with your wallet in 2-3 years.

People have already made a statement with thier wallet.

The Chief was the “MAIN” character in Halo 4, was he not? So that’s obviously not it.
Halo 5’s gameplay is the closest to Halo since Halo 3, so that’s not it.
Halo 5 reversed the process Halo Reach and 4 started and is still disliked, so that’s obviously not it.
Competitive playlists work for competitive and social players, according to everyone during Halo 4’s time, so that’s not it.

It’s almost like there’s not actually one specific thing Halo itself has done causing a decline in popularity, and seems to reflect a changing industry. Interesting.

I know. But 343’s not gonna change, so you’ll have to keep doing it until MS doesn’t something. It seems like with every game they make, they piss off more people for one reason or another, so if MS isn’t taking action now (which they might be, who knows) maybe they will when Halo 6 inevitably has lower sales than this did.

H5 is the closest to h3 but it still plays nothing like h3. H5 isn’t reversing anything reach or h4 did. Its going down the same road of “modernisation”.

No

Compelling arguement.

I disagree, I think the gameplay is perfect now. The only thing I dislike about the game is it’s current lack of content.

Armor abilities, ordinance drops, and flinch disagree.

If the solution was revert to exactly Halo 3 gameplay, then absolutely nothing shows it.
You say to vote with your wallet. The industry has ben voting for nearly a decade since Halo 3… and they aren’t voting for Halo 3.

You say “modernizing” is killing Halo. Where’s the evidence that going completely backwards isn’t going to do the same thing?

You are one person. Your personal opinion in the face of declining sales and an overall population that falls outside of the xbl top 10 means nothing.

Changing out some “modern” mechanics for others does not change the track the game is on.

Your other points make literally no sense.

Why is this guy acting like there’s been a new Halo game like Halo 3 available to buy for the last five years?

winner winner chicken dinner.

halo is not salvageable, but not because of its changes. what gamers want has changed.

A game needs to change and evolve over time. If 343 just kept repackaging Halo 3 people would be just as pissed off. And if the game had remained stagnant like how you would wish it to be, Halo would most likely be in a worse position.
We live in an ADHD world where attention spans are short and people want to bring on the next new shiny toy. So that’s just how it is now.

Did Halo 3 not get to whee it was by advancing on what the previous game set up? Did Halo 5 not do the same thing, if you simply lookat the Halo games themselves?

If you want me to spell it out for you, I will.
If the path to popularity lies in reverting back to classic Halo 3-esque gameplay, then all the modern games would feature Halo 3-esque gameplay. They don’t. The concept that pushing Halo back to what was popular in 2007 will cause a huge spike in popularity simply isn’t supported… at all.
You can use the declining population as proof, but ignoring every other reason for population decline only detracts from your argument.
Halo 5 is now competing with several extremely popular franchises who release virtually every year, as opposed to every 3. That means there are over 3 times as much constant attention for those franchises that Halo has to push through, as opposed to when everyone was waiting for Halo. Technical issues and past mishaps (MCC) caused a decrease in trust in 343i, perhaps enough to have an impact. The Xbox One itself is more generally viewed as the inferior console compared to Playstation, the opposite of when Halo 3 launched. The One just doesn’t have the same momentum.

Are there things Halo 5 can do to improve? Absolutely. Do those things involve resetting the clocks to 2007? No, evidence suggests that it doesn’t. Are those things the sole reason for the decline in popularity? Nope.

Lol

Gaming is the one industry where change is hated the most. Where new IPs drown in the familiarity of sequels and franchises.

If you look at the xbl top 10 you’l see games that have stuck to thier roots of gameplay creeping up on games that have declined due to changing for the sake of change.

This are all baseless assumptions which have been proven to be untrue time after time.

The fact that COD(declining due to needless gameplay changes) is being nearly overtaken by fallout 3 with new graphics should be all the proof you need.

Fallout 4 is VERY similiar to fallout 3. Fallout 3 came out in 08. People are VERY happy about this.

I disagree with op. I think they’ve developed the right mix of modern style and old halo style.

It you were saying this about Halo 4 I’d probably agree, but Halo 5 seems to have touched on it’s routes as well as evolving.
