In one of the games I played last night I picked up a covenant carbine and it had a different skin. It was black with two orange stripes on it. Not sure if this is legtimiate or not but I thought it would be best to report it here.
No, it’s not a mod. Halo 4 has customizable weapon skins.
It was probably the skin from the Championship Bundle DLC

Some of them you get just by ranking up and completing your Spartan specializations. Others are DLC (Like the steampunk themed skins as an example) or are obtained elsewhere - such as pre-order bonuses.
There is currently at least one skin that can’t be obtained and that’s the BLAST skin for the Battle Rifle (Orange and white IIRC).

Did you read the link above? I think it’s the Reign skin, but it could also be the Locomotive skin.
