I made a thread a long time ago before Halo 4 came out asking why we couldn’t just host our own servers. The answer was that unfair server admins can be INCREDIBLY annoying with the good servers always being full. Not to mention the sticky issue of hosting. HOWEVER, we can combat both of these problems by:
Launching the Custom Games Browser alongside the usual Matchmaking options for Halo 5. That way, if no server is appealing to you, boom, just switch right over to MM with no hassle.
Using Microsoft’s shiny new dedicated servers and possibly cloud servers for hosting.
I’ve always thought that a Custom Games Browser working alongside regular Matchmaking would work very well. It’s a pretty great idea that I can see no downsides to. Custom Games would be reinvigorated and the issues from the previous games with finding players would be eradicated. The lobby privacy options would actually be useful, and with some advanced search features and all the custom options back, I can’t even imagine how fantastic it would be! It’d work especially well with the Xbox One, I think.

Well, there is one thing that could very well be detrimental. It might split the population in half. Half would be in MM and the other half would be in customs.
HOWEVER, in the long run, a custom games browser would REALLY add to the longevity of the game.
