Mixing PvE with PvP in Multiplayer

PvE and PvP have been staples of the game ever since 2001 with H:CE yet there have been very few combinations of the two in Halo’s 20 year history. The two modes that I can think of that mix these staples of Halo are Warzone (a controversial mode form Halo 5 that’s main purpose was to sell microtractions in a Pay-to-Win system) and Verses Firefight from H.Reach (that was only really a small addition onto Firefight). This is such a shame because there is such potential for a mixing of PvE and PvP in BTB-like modes. I will give a proposal of a mode like this to explain my point further.

As an example of my point, I think that AI could be implemented into BTB in the following ways.

  1. AI could be present in the Team’s bases in modes like Capture the Flag. What I would advise as the Ai in the bases is Elites tht have the same colour as the team that they are in the base of. These Elites could also have Plasma Rifles. Plasma Rifles could literally be introduced for these Elites as a weapon that isn’t particularly worth picking up so players don’t just take their weapons as better ones.

  2. Possibly, BTB modes that are basically just slayer on a huge scale could have a number of hunters or other Ai on each team.

A new mode: Skirmish.
This new mode could be as follows:

  1. This could be a mode that could be a type of slayer yet it really could be anything at any scale. Although, I think slayer matches with only a few players on each team would work the best.

  2. Even in Free-for-All matches, there will be teams, let me explain. First, the game starts by balancing the teams with player bots if needed. Then for each player it bot on each team, there will be an AI on that team (this AI will be set to ODST by default yet can be altered to be anything). Then there will be a group of AI on a team of there own. For each player or bot in the whole game, there will be one AI on this team (the default AI is Marine, yet this can be altered to be anything).

  3. As an example of what I just said, image that there are two teams. There are two players on one team and one player on the other team. The team with only one player get a player bot to even out the teams. Then, each team receives two “ODST’s” due to both teams having two players or bots. Then, there will be 4 “Marines” in their own team due to there being 4 players or player bots in the whole game.

Those are my suggestions and proposals.

This sounds like an extension of what Warzone in Halo 5 tried to do, except the AI would be delegated to specific teams rather than be a neutral third party on the map. It could definitely be interesting to play and I’d love to see your ideas expanded on more because they sound like fun.

With the modding tools coming out and freedoms offered on the PC-side of things I can definitely see a Warzone esque gametype coming to Halo: Reach or something in MCC, less so for Infinite but we can be hopeful.

It would be nice to see the next iteration of Warzone and REQ Weapons.

I will always be in support of modes that mix pvp and pve, as it really does feel like I’m getting the best of both worlds. Warzone in Halo 5 could have been done better, but the concept was awesome. Even Gambit in Destiny is a fan favorite because it allows people who are good at certain things to shine. If you are great at dancing around and elites then you can help your team secure an objective faster. If you are great at advancing on the enemy, you can wipe them while they try to tackle some Hunters. Hopefully we can get a super cool pvp/pve mode in Infinite at some point.

Yea I too enjoy a good PvPvM.

Warzone and firefight were all I played towards the end of my H5 career

A great example of PvE & PvP mix is Titanfall 2. It had some of the coolest gameplay moments in any recent multiplayer game.

I thought that having AI on a team of there own team (poweful Ai like Hunters, I mean) would re-create the issue in Warzone where you could steal someone’s kill. With them on teams with two teams, there is less of that issue because the only people able to steal your kill would be on your team so it wouldn’t impact the game as much.

However, I did also suggest a new MP Mode called Skirmish that has general-team AI, go back to my original post if you wanna read.
