Missile Launcher Balancing?

So the rocket launcher is currently a level 5 REQ for the base variant and the slightly upgraded one. Each one comes with about eight rockets.

Personally I think this weapon, whilst it is a mainstay of the games, is really weak compared to other REQs that do what it does much better for less points.

  • It has a slow rate of fire.

  • The projectiles are very slow. This makes the weapon surprisingly inaccurate unless fired at point blank range. This is the main advantage of the laser and railgun. So in reality the laser and railgun can be fully charged before the recket actually hits the target; assuming it hits.

  • It has a low ammunition count.

  • It does only a modest amount of damage to vehicles.

  • Its homing ability is useless since it can be negated by Banshee spamming roll, nobody uses Phaetons and the slow proectiles mean a wasp will see the rocket and have a leisurely amount of time to dodge. The only reason a wasp pilot wouldn’t is because he doesn’t recognize what he is looking at and is so stunned that somebody used a rocket launcher that he doesn’t move.

  • Its AoE damage is highly situational. A plasma caster can have far more impact and has a lot more utility with its charged shots. The same is true of the Reach Launchers EMP ability.

  • Other one hit kill weapons like the sniper or railgun are easier to use and have much greater range and ammunition.

Solution:

I think that in Warzone the rocket launcher should be the poor man’s anti tank/AA weapon. It should be the case that anyone can pretty easily get their hands on a rocket launcher. So I think the base model should only be a level 3 REQ. The reason is that in traditional Halo the rocket launcher was usually used like the shotgun as a close range weapon; which its still relatively good at. So it should be priced similarly to weapons like the energy sword and gravity hammer. Weapons like the laser and railgun are still vastly better at anti vehicle duty and the weapons limited ammunition and poor accuracy means you won’t have people getting crazy kill streaks. It also gives another option in Assault and when trying to take bases that could liven up these fights with lots of corridor clearing ordinance.

The same is probably also true for the Incineration Cannon which should also be a level 3 REQ. I mean just think about what else you can get at level 5 and what you could get if you wait until level 6?

i have no problem with the rocket launcher. Anyway the game is coming to an end soon. And I would keep it at the req level it is at. Otherwise too many people will be trigger happy spawning rockets everywhere. I want variety in my game, not rocket spam.

You’re not getting variety. In early game Warzone most people don’t use low level REQ’s since their basic BR is so effective. If they want AT most people go with the much better laser and railgun. The Missile Launcher is an incredibly rare REQ outside of firefight and that’s purely because people are using their less useful REQ’s in that game mode.

So currently it isn’t a viable weapon. This means that in Assault, the battle turns into a crazed shootout at the Okay Coral. Adding launchers as a cheap breaching REQ would liven things up.

The weapon has so many limitations compared to other weapons that it doesn’t make sense to keep it at level 5. It only has that level because of the lingering myth that its a powerful weapon; when in fact its outclassed by cheaper weapons.

The rocket is weak and I rarely use it myself. If I do then it’s for base protection or ground assault in which it is more than adequate. Lowering it to level 4 would be fine for Assault and Firefight but maybe not regular Warzone.
