So my Husband and I finally got some alone time to play Halo 4 tonight, let me start by saying that us playing Halo won’t be happening again. 6 games in a row we played were “Join in Progress” which is junk in the 1st place.
If you aren’t in a full party you are automatically thrown into a match that is so lopsided you are forced to quit! So after finally getting a match that we actually got to choose, it’s laggy and the game goes black screen and stays there for 3-4 minutes then everyone in our party got kicked out to the lobby.
This isn’t the 1st time this has happened, and we are both tired of it. My husband and I actually met on Halo 2, so Halo has always had a special place in our heart, I think the gameplay on Halo 4 is fantastic, I know I will probably get yelled at for saying this but the gameplay is just as good as Halo 2.
However the Matchmaking system itself sucks, there is nothing fun about getting thrown into games when the enemy team is established and the game is 960- 130. You guys need to remove the feature, because it still happens way to often.
We did pick up Black Ops 2 a while back and have discovered that, while it doesn’t take much skill to play it, it is MUCH more fun and definitely has a much more solid matchmaking system. Lag is rare and getting thrown into games happens but usually its when the game just starts (which still sucks).
Network issues are Halo 4’s number one issue and sadly I dont think there is much that can be done about it =/
Im just hanging on until Halo 5 when we get dedicated servers and a more advanced platform.
Halo 4: How To Avoid Join In Progress
It is extremely unlikely the lag issues will ever be resolved since it is partly down to Halo 4’s awful host selection that frequently gives host to people on satellite and 3g/4g wireless connections.
I’ve been in lobbies with friends who have 100/40mbps connections but instead Halo 4 gives host to friends on satellite and 3g/4g wireless and the only fix is for said player to leave the party which sucks.
If the host’s connection becomes congested during a match rarely if ever will the host migrate, instead everyone will be forced to suffer through terrible lag until either the congestion clears up or the match ends often only to end up with a DNF.
The lack of any latency or region filters means being placed in matches with players 5,000 miles distant is commonplace.
Host selection aside the netcode is significantly worse than most popular games.
My advice is to just stop playing, it isn’t worth the frustration and if people make a stand 343i may release a decent product next time and not expect us to be paid beta testers for a product that is never fixed.
Let’s talk about Reach and what two topics were most common to anger a player.
-
Players hated being abandoned by their teammates who quit and left them stranded by themselves or as a smaller group.
-
Player who quit complained they were being banned and the punishment was uncalled for and the banning system should be abolished.
Now the introduction of JIP was implemented due to players quitting and it hasn’t swayed or decreased the amount of quitting but still has caused grief for those who accept their teammates in the match, the map that is chosen and will accept the outcome of the match even if they get their butts whipped from the start.
I personally think we have catered and given into the players who quit.
JIP can work but this again boils down to punishment for quitters with harsher penalties or it must be scrapped and a new set of rules established which would allow players who are abandoned not to be punished for quitting after an amount of players have quit in certain playlists which consist of more than 4 teammates. I also think that loosing a couple thousand players who abuse the system that receive a ban is much better than punishing the players who play by the rules and respect their teammates and choices.
I came back to Halo over the weekend with H3 and then H4. I found games quicker in the mid to high 40s in Lone Wolves H3 than I did Rumble Pit H4. There’s no JIP in H3 yet it found players better than H4 despite H4 having more players online.
I don’t buy the previous post - the Halo community has always wanted equal starts to a match. If you don’t go in with a team you are running a risk - so go play FFA where you don’t rely on other people.

That’s because the game seems to be hostbox happy. I had access to a hostbox for a while (about 3-4 months ago) and I managed to score host in about 90 of 100 matches until the game realised that giving host to the only Australian in a lobby full of UK players was a bad idea. I think the worst part was that even when I joined in progress, I was able to steal host. o_O
@Mrs Warside - It is upsetting you have had such a poor time playing Halo 4 but you have exaggerated slightly. If you do not wish to play Halo 4 anymore, Halo 3 becomes free for gold members this week. So maybe you should give that a go!

Being in an all Aussie match and having one or more players quit and the get replaced by an international player who pulls host got old.
Amazing how anyone could think interrupting matches without any real testing would be a good idea.
Last time I played a few SWAT games a German JIP midway through a match and pulled host, needless to say for the seven Aussies in the match including myself it became a struggle to get kills.
The worst playlist to me as far as network issues is BTB. I hardly ever see a blackscreen in Infinity Slayer, but it happens at least once a game in Big Team. Thank God there are enough people playing Infinity again to make it enjoyable and I can get out of Big Team for a while.
Exaggerated slightly? And I don’t want to play Halo 3 that’s not the issue here, it’s 343’s lack of interest in the Halo population why do you think it is so low? It’s because Halo isn’t what it should be.

There are more random players playing then there are teams and having 8 random players on a team playing BTB is still a team no matter how you look at it. I never have read or seen a warning stating enter at your own risk on any playlists and keep out if you aren’t a part of a team due the risk of someone quitting. I don’t see any risk at all and I’ve played thousands of Halo matches as a random player and players quitting is not a risk and is more of a pain in the yoink then anything else.
I assume you and your husband are playing big team? I almost always JIP and get multiple black screens in big team. It’s just one of the many reasons I’ve been playing Halo 3. There seems to be less quitters and I get games almost as fast as Halo 4. Less lag too.

I would be fascinated to see your W/L ratio given this strategy. I used to be random in H3 all the time then in Reach and H4 have refused - my W/L increased significantly by having some playlist discipline and playing FFA when I didn’t have anyone on.
