Midnight in the heart of the Midlothian

This short story was absolutely fantastic, and I love how it puts things in perspective. Cancer, for example, isn’t a big deal in the 2500s. One thing that I especially noticed is how every time Baird faced a mortal situation, he was given drugs and all of the sudden, somehow, able to keep going. This reminded me of respawning and checkpoints in the games. What is your opinion on this and other things within this short story?

I never thought of it that way, but you bring up a great point. It felt like a mini Chief/Cortana dynamic with the ship AI helping to keep the ODST going. With all the grand, epic stories that fill the Halo universe, I cherish stories like these that just focus on the smallest issues for a short period. It’s important for the well-being of an extended universe for there to be stories that focus on things that aren’t all that integral to the overall story.

Same here. The Halo universe is fantastic on its own because of the universal stakes at hand. But these small stories that truly define the fate of the protagonists are what gives it life. Without these small heroes, humanity would be no more. If these heroes were replaced with anybody else, the fate would’ve been different. Just a couple small things. It’s a domino/butterfly effect. It’s a million piece puzzle with all the pieces being unique to the universe and unique within it.

I always liked how it connected to Prototype.

You know, this didn’t occur to me until your comment. I had just never thought about it like that.

Yeah at the end of Prototype they make a reference about rendezvousing with the Heart of Midlothian. In the beginning of Heart of Midlothian you can see the Prototype armor and Marines fighting against the Covenant in the briefing for the mission.
