Mid-distance "lunge" melee?

I’ve been losing a lot of close-quarters encounters to a melee attack that I can’t seem to figure out. Specifically, if my opponent and I are close, but not quite close enough to press the melee button and land a hit, I sometimes see them lunge at me and kill me with a melee.

Note that this isn’t a spartan charge or ground pound - we’re already dancing around, and there’s not sufficient time to ramp-up for one of those types of attacks. This is more of a quick leap to close the last little bit of distance for an arms-length attack.

I used to do this in Halo 3 by pressing jump a split second before pressing melee. I keep doing that in Halo 4 and 5 out of reflex, but it doesn’t work the same. I thought that maybe people are using their thruster to get close and punch, but the delay between thrust and punch is too long when I try to do that myself. Then again, I may just be doing it wrong.

Or, I may be perceiving what’s happening on the screen wrong. If so, tell me to take a hike. If this lunge-melee is a real thing though, I’d appreciate some advice on how to do it. TIA.

(BTW, if you could explain this in terms of action - such as “jump” or “melee” - as opposed to which button to push, that would be helpful. I’m using bumper jumper, and have to translate between those button names and other layouts whenever I read an article on technique. Thanks.)

I’ve done it a few times but other times it doesn’t work, it might be a bug. It feels very similar to the lunge you can do with energy bayonet weapons which is similar to a sword lunge, but sometimes it happens when I don’t even have a bayonet weapon equipped nor have I picked one up the entire game.

There’s also a weird thing where you can seemingly one-hit melee someone from their front whose shields are still up or they can do it to you but it almost always happens when they melee hit you first, almost like there’s a temporary damage boost. I don’t have the melee armor boost and I’ve done it to people so either it’s a bug or there’s a counter melee damage boost that I’m not aware of. I’ve been killed in that scenario with full health and shields, the other person definitely didn’t have an energy bayonet weapon.

I suspect it just someone performing a melee at the longest range it can be done at.

This is why

What ?

I don’t get it I some times am right in their face looking right at them and the melee just doesn’t land

Again, this cannot be considered OP or unfair as everyone has this ability. Jesus, whining.

That will be connection/lag/latency issues

Yeah, maybe that’s it. I’m kinda slow on the draw, so perhaps they’re just hitting the button at the perfect time while I’m still thinking about it.

That’s interesting. I definitely haven’t experienced that radical of an aim assist with melee before. The video is from October 28; maybe 343 tamed it a bit since then?

I’m pretty sure it’s just this. I’ve lunged and performed a melee on someone from a ridiculous distance away…

Try to avoid the jumping melee. There’s a delay on the melee attack when you jump cause the game thinks you want to ground pound. I’ve lost quite a few melee battles cause of this.

Two words: Energy Bayonet. Unless it’s Arena, then I can’t help you.

i move forward (maybe with a little sprint, not a full sprint so to charges) as i melee, this lunges.

Ah HA! That makes a lot of sense. This is so obvious in retrospect, but something that I hadn’t considered before.

Thanks for the advice; I’ll work on un-training my fingers to jump first.
