Microsoft told me to purchase a VPN to play

So me and my girlfriend both acquired copies of Halo MCC on steam, and when we would play the same multiplayer matches together, without fail, it would boot one of us saying that the connection was interrupted, and we would be slapped with bans for abandoning the game. We live together and cannot play matchmaking together at all. I checked both our NAT types, tried all the port forwarding to no avail. I contacted Microsoft and talked to three representatives before one told me to just buy a VPN because we were coming from the same IP. It fixed the problem, but it’s absolute crap because I should not have to pay to do something that every other game in my steam library has no problem doing. I don’t want my money back for the games, I want this fixed.

This has happened to me too on Console, but only once or twice. I assumed it was because my internet connection was finicky.
Let’s narrow it down to whether this is a problem on your end, or Microsoft’s. Does this happen with other online multiplayer games on your PC, or only with MCC? Does this issue occur even when you play independently from you partner (and vice versa)?

So you live together and you connect to the same router?

Seems like something fishy is with your router or whatever access point you connect to.
People playing matchmaking together while connected to the same router should not be a problem.
Are you trying to share Steam accounts or doing anything else weird like that?
Is your router set as a bridge?
Do you have a Wifi extender?

If either you or your partner have a phone data plan, try using that as a connection point for either one of you.

Separate steam accounts, separate Microsoft accounts, router is not being used as a bridge, NAT is set to open. As I said, we have no problems when we play and I have the VPN turned on on my computer, the moment we play and it’s turned off, we can maybe play one game without issue, and then it starts up with the disconnecting and banning again. As I said, I contacted Microsoft, who told me to contact 343, and their contact information is Microsoft, who ended up telling me to just purchase a VPN. We can play online matches independently of each other, and peer to peer connections such as campaign and custom games are not effected. Anytime we que up in matchmaking together, we have these issues. No other game in my 100+ game steam library with multiplayer gives me this issues, it is specifically Halo MCC. I can play games like Monster Hunter, PayDay2, Killing Floor 1 and 2, all sorts of games online with people in my house with no issue.

Does the problem still happen when you play online multiplayer solo?

As I said above, we can play online independently of each other, solo qued up with no issues.

To me, this sounds like some sort of online boosting prevention. You can’t play online from the same connection point.

But it is strange that it lets you play sometimes for a match but then fails again.
Can you give that Phone hot-spot a try? Are you both using wifi? Can you try it over ethernet?

We are playing with Ethernet connections from both computers. We could try the phone hot-spot, but using the VPN kind of already proves it’s some IP issue because when I use the VPN and play from someone else’s IP it loads up just fine and can play for hours uninterrupted. The moment it is turned off issues immediately start happening again. Some people have suggested static IPs, but you can’t really do that without paying a higher premium from my ISP, sooooo either way I have to spend money for something that I shouldn’t have to.

Can you try going over WIfi while your partner stays on Ethernet?
Have you tried to match up randomly against your partner? Like, starting a 2v2 search at the same time to see if you would match against her?
If you open your router settings and check what IPs are assigned to both of your PCs, can you try changing it? If its like 192.168.0.10 for you and your partner is on .11, try changing it to .50 or something.
Have you done an ipcofnig /flushdns followed by an ipconfig /registerdns followed by ipconfig /renew ?

Dang. Sorry about that, man. Even with the extra money spent though, I’m sure you can find an extra use with the services you have to pay for.
Happy shooting!
