Microsoft to Acquire ZeniMax Media.

Link to the announcement.

Critically acclaimed creators of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Quake, Starfield and more join Team Xbox.

> Today is a special day, as we welcome some of the most accomplished studios in the games industry to Xbox. We are thrilled to announce Microsoft has entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks.

I was not expecting that! I wonder how this acquisition will affect the development of TES6 and Starfield. Zenimax owns some of my favorite IP’s, so I’m excited about this

As I said to my friends, if this agreement goes through, The Elder Scrolls VI can possibly have more time dedicated to it and could quite possibly push the Xbox Series X, therefore creating the most stunning Elder Scrolls game we have ever seen.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat

This is nuts. If XGS decides to pull the trigger on making Fallout and TES exclusives for the Xbox platform, this is a huge game changer. Not to mention Doom, which I believe also falls somewhere under that umbrella.

Doom and Wolfenstein fall under that umbrella

I don’t see them doing it, first it’ll piss off people because these games by Bethesda and such were never exclusive before, and bethesda itself has had a shaky reputation ever since FO76. The biggest reason I just don’t see it happening though is because microsoft has been very inclusive on their games and getting franchises like fallout, elder scrolls, doom, quake, etc etc will just mskm their push on their game pass subscription much more appealing, so appealing I’d likely put it as the best subscription to get in gaming.

Now I could see exclusive content or dlc being timed, but I doubt we’ll see them make a game exclusive, I think it’d be detrimental to their business really.

You may very well be right, but I would like to point out that The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was only on Xbox and PC.

Oblivion was a 1 year exclusive as well if my memory serves me correctly… Also Spider-Man is a PlayStation exclusive and it isn’t detrimental to Sony and you also have to look at previous studios Xbox owns obsidian and the outer worlds was already announced for all consoles so it released but obsidians new game Avowed is coming soon and that’s technically an exclusive ie not going to PlayStation or switch

True. I’m not going to sit here and say microsoft won’t do it, but I just believe it’ll be detrimental for a few obvious reasons. Xbox has been hitting backwards compatibility pretty hard, their subscription model is meant to get people involved without people having to pay full price for ganes (why pay 60$ for one game when you can pay what is it, 15? 10 Dollars minimum for over 100+ games?) Getting zenimax really makes it enticing if they incorporate them into the model. Microsoft has been marketing so much about being inclusive and that’s their fight they’ve been winning. Start doing exclusives and you’re literally doing the opposite of what you’ve been working for.

They could do it, but I personally doubt they will, I believe they’ll keep to what they’re doing but making it even stronger with what they got. Now if they want to do exclusives, I’d do it on a new IP entirely instead of something like fallout or elder scrolls. At least that way you won’t piss off people who are used to getting to play those games on multiple platforms. Idk about others, but I’m also a believer that gaming itself is moving past the age of exclusives as it’s really not as profitable as it used to be nor is it as profitable as some like to think. There’s a reason so many franchises have opened up the last few years to no longer being exclusive to a console.

Personally I’m excited about this move not because I care about it’s benefits to microsoft, but because I believe microsoft can be beneficial to bethesda and such. Microsoft should definitely be pushing Bethesda to get away from creation engine for modding and get to something not as outdated cause I’ll be honest, their mods could be so much better but zenimax never pushed bethesda to do it. Reason#2 is a new engine for all their games cause bethesda’s games are really outdated (and I don’t mean games they’ve published like doom, I mean bethesda’s actual games they make themselves like fallout and elderscrolls) and it’s really starting to show. I believe microsoft will really be making Bethesda better with this deal.

Master Chief, Doom Slayer, AND BJ Blazkowicz. A news article for this was the first thing I saw without seeking it out. This is pretty freaking huge. Excited about this acquisition. Now it’s all a matter of making sure those three remain the badass icons they always have been.

Big announcement! This will make the landscape of Xbox titles very interesting.

Consider as well that from now on, every new title from Bethesda and the other studios, will be on Game Pass.

Fingers crossed brother! That’d make me use my Xbox more than I currently do.

You wouldn’t even have to use your Xbox, mate, if you have Game Pass Ultimate. Play the games on your PC or Android phone (assuming you have them, lol).

To be clear, I don’t really think MS is going to go with making the legacy Bethesda franchises (at least most of them) Xbox exclusives, but I can easily imagine Starfield and new IP’s going that way since there’s no precedent for multiplat releases for them. If Microsoft’s track record is anything to go on, they’ll likely just take the “Good Guy Microsoft,” points (and the insane multiplat revenue) by releasing and supporting TES, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein (if there’s any oomph left in it after Youngblood), etc. on Playstation like they did with Minecraft. MCC even proves there’s a chance they’ll put stuff on Steam, so nothing can be ruled out.

I also don’t think future Switch releases for Bethesda games are out of the question, particularly ports of older stuff. For example, an Elder Scrolls anthology featuring Morrowind, Oblivion, and the already supported Skyrim on the Switch would make a big splash without disrupting any real profit streams for TES on Xbox presently or for the foreseeable future, and everyone gets the warm fuzzies when MS plays nice with Nintendo lately. Sounds like a win-win for Nintendo, Microsoft, and Bethesda to me. In my wildest fantasies, Nintendo starts to feel like they can’t do without the MS partnership and the two collaborate on Game Pass coming to Switch. It’s crazy! So crazy it just might work? (Not holding my breath)

Even if MS supports Sony releases for a lot of Bethesda franchises, this deal is going to hurt Playstation the most. My biggest question (although I do think I know the answer as reasoned above) is whether or not Microsoft will twist the knife and force the exclusive advantage given the obscene amount or money they spent on Bethesda. It’s probably the less profitable way to go, and certainly the less popular as far as MS maintaining the beneficent image they’ve spent years building up at this point. But unlike pretty much every other franchise under their belts, Fallout and Elder Scrolls in particular as console exclusives would seriously move units. If Starfield is as great as Todd Howard obviously thinks it will be, though, that being exclusive by itself might just be good enough.

I’m just super intrigued to see how it all plays out.

Honestly, I would be perfectly fine with them releasing the games on other platforms as well, but I hope that they at least give us Xbox players exclusive content as games released on the PS tend to have.
