How do I turn my mic on?
The xbox head set? It’s on by default. Have you updated your controller recently? You may need to do that. Make sure the head set is plugged inn when you do… If that’s not the problem try sending a voice message to a friend… Listen to the playback before sending it. If it’s an empty message items more than likely a defective or damaged head set.
And turn off your Kinect. My xbox would get confused about whether I wanted to use the headset mic or the kinect mic. Annoying.

I don’t have a Kinect.
There is a mute button on the mic connector that goes into the controller. Make sure that is off and your volume is up. Other than that it should just work.
