Mendicant Bias and Primordial

Hello, i am new to the lore and i want to learn more about the Mendicant Bias and primordial.
So i know that mendicant bias was infected with a logic plague by the primordial and so he turned against the forerunners. I don’t understand that when he was entombed in the lesser ark why couldn’t he free himself as the precursors we a lot more powerful than the forerunners and why does he need the reclaimer which i believe is master chief because 343 guilty spark in halo 2 said he was the reclaimer? I am a bit lost after the whole imprisonment of Mendicant Bias,
Thanks

If I’ve read your question right:

Mendicant Bias is a Forerunner AI (or ancilla, as they called them). Even a Precursor AI may not have been able to escape on their own, as it would still be an AI and not an actual Precursor, but that’s conjecture. It’s also stated that Mendicant Bias didn’t want to escape, that he wanted to be entombed until a time that he could do something to help the Reclaimers (Halo 3), in an attempt to atone for his past actions against the Forerunners. I believe he was also happy to then go back into exile after helping, until the end of his days. If that opportunity never arose, then he was content to be alone with his thoughts of atonement, until he died.

To this date, the main part of Mendicant Bias is still entombed on the Lesser Ark, although other fragments of him remain in other places (including, confusingly, on the Lesser Ark).

To the best of my knowledge, it may not necessarily HAVE to be a reclaimer that frees him, but it would make sense that that is the case, given how Forerunner tech works (only humanity can activate it).

In terms of reclaimer, that is a bit confusing.

Even though 343 refers to Chief as Reclaimer, it is suggested that this is only because he is human, meaning all humans as a species are “Reclaimers”. However, given events in the Greg Bear novels and statements by the Librarian in H4…it may well be the case that the Chief in himself IS the reclaimer. It may well be that both are true - Humanity are (or at least were) intended to attain the Mantle, making them the ‘Reclaimer species’ as such, but that it may well be Chief that makes that happen, making him personally the Reclaimer.

I know that may seem a bit confusing, if you need me to clarify anything then just ask.

Thank you for clearing it up,
So when the Primordial infected Mendicant Bias it turned into a Gravemind, if in Halo 2 the Gravemind had the Chief why didn’t he force the Chief to free Mendicant Bias since he is /his species is the reclaimed? Mendicant Bias has a lot of knowledge about everything forerunner therefore, he would be of great value to the Gravemind/Primordial

The Primordial was already a sort of Proto-Gravemind - part way between Precursor and Flood. It grew I believe into a Gravemind and then a key mind, but that isn’t because it infected Mendicant with the logic plague. Remember, the flood absorbs and assimilates organic tissue, that is how they grow and become different forms. The Primordial simply turned Mendicant against the Forerunner and learnt its knowledge.

To start, the Gravemind had alreary learned everything it could from Mendicant Bias in the Flood-Forerunner war, so it had little need to try and turn him again. Plus, for all the Gravemind knew, Mendicant had been destroyed - it didn’t know what had happened to him, let alone knowing where he had been entombed.

Also, even if he had been freed, Mendicant never would have worked for the Flood again. Hence why he helped Chief & Arbiter on the ring, and not the Flood. By that time, Chief had already learnt the true nature of the Gravemind as well.

When Mendicant Bias was imprisoned on the Ark, it was done so in a way that the only thought MB would experience was “atonement”. So when a fragment of MB somehow managed to escape confinement, it sought to make amends by finding humanity and helping them fulfill their destiny as Reclaimers. Only a fragment managed to escape because it was a prison, after all, escape was intended to be impossible. MB itself was not a Precursor so the power of the Precursors means nothing in terms of MB’s ability to escape confinement. Unfortunately, that fragment that did escape crashed on the homeworld of the San Shyuum, and became and Oracle to their Covenant.

The point is that by this time, MB had already recovered from the logic plague. This is further shown in the H3 final terminal when MB communicates with Chief, explaining that it was a personal weakness that he chose to side with the Flood. During Halo 3, the missing fragment of MB is brought back to the Ark thanks to Truth, allowing MB to recomplete and gain his freedom, after which he migrated to the newly formed Installation 08 to assist Chief in escaping. He was no longer under the effects of the logic plague and recognized that he was wrong to have betrayed the Forerunners.

How was MB able to launch the dreadnought if he was disconnected from it by lekgolo worms?

You are profoundly mixed up. MB launched the Keyship from the Ark thousands of years before the events of Contact Harvest.

His “casing” or “physical embodiment” is still located on Zeta Halo, isn’t it?

Incorrect. After being defeated by the Iso-Didact at the end of Primordium, MB was disassembled and its parts were scattered throughout the ecumene for further study. Its personality construct array however, is entombed deep within a vast desert on the Ark.

That’s why people thought the guardian in the Halo 5 trailer, when is came out, was actually Mendicant Bias. Frankly, fan theories are better than actual story at this point of time.

Zeta Halo was the site of his main housing unit but that doesn’t mean he could leave that place.
I’m sure his core is still there, even though he won’t be (or at least, he shouldn’t be).

That’s what I’m thinking - a fragment left in the core.

He shouldn’t have been able to escape his tomb on the lesser ark, but…

It’s unlikely a fragment was left behind. Offensive Bias was specifically designed to defeat Mendicant Bias. It would be a huge oversight on OB’s part to have not done a final check of the galaxy for any remaining fragments of MB, especially at such an obvious location as Installation 07.

Also I made a typo. His core was on I07 but it was established that he was not restricted to that housing unit. Whether he traveled through the Domain to other locations/installations or had some sort of mobile housing unit, MB was capable of going around beyond I07.

I’ve always been curious about ancilla using the domain to travel but not found anything concrete enough to bank on it.

If true, though…blows the whole thing wide open potentially.

Ok, so in the end of halo 2 when the keyship leaves for Earth Mendicant Bias is not operating it? Because in HiddenXperia vid How Mendicant Bias influenced Master Chief in Halo 2 and Halo 3 - YouTube

The ones controlling the ship were Truth and his loyalists. MB was pretty much disconnected from the main systems after Contact Harvest. The MB that Cortana fought against was a mere fraction of a fraction of his former self. A passive sliver left to perform basic tasks, and even this was almost enough to overwhelm Cortana. Which tells you how powerful Metarch class ancilla were.

Oh thanks, I understand now and that fragment of MB went to ark and then it reconstructed itself and is presumably dead? If MB was able to reconstruct itself is it possible that he could have escaped his imprisonment, I assume he would be more powerful and could control the ark in some way? Or is that a bit of a stretch

But how does cortana fighting MB delay the launch of the Keyship if he is not controlling it? If truth was controlling it Chief would not have made it onboard, right?

So when a fragment of MB somehow managed to escape confinement, it sought to make amends by finding humanity and helping them fulfill their destiny as Reclaimers. Only a fragment managed to escape because it was a prison, after all, escape was intended to be impossible. MB itself was not a Precursor so the power of the Precursors means nothing in terms of MB’s ability to escape confinement. Unfortunately, that fragment that did escape crashed on the homeworld of the San Shyuum, and became and Oracle to their Covenant.

Please do not double post. The fragment on the Keyship merged with MB’s main array and updated it with a few thousand years worth of data. That was enough for it to regain a tiny bit of control, which manifested in the Terminal messages he sent Master Chief. That was the extent of his power, he did not have enough to break free from entombment.

As for your second post, just because MB wasn’t directly in control doesn’t mean he wasn’t present. It could be anything from him setting defensive firewalls or occupying bandwidth that Cortana needed. My guess was that Cortana was fighting to keep the power conduit connected or a door open which may have been basic tasks MB oversaw.
