So, I cannot believe this just occurred to me, but, in the games both brutes and elites have their own melee weapons (Grav hammers and Energy Swords) but humans do not. I’m expecting forerunners to get them before humans do. I get that a human weapon as effective as the hammer or sword would be difficult to imagine up, just a passing thought. I guess you could argue that humans use knives and elites get those little wrist plasma knife things, but, that’s exclusively for assassinations. What are your thoughts or ideas on this?
The UNSC has bayonets. Does that count?
In a way they kinda do. They have the Energy Bayonet, Knight Blade, and combat knife. I don’t think they really need any more close range weapons as they already have the Shotgun. I wouldn’t be opposed if they added some sort of melee feature with the combat knife as long as its not too overdone (looking at you COD).
Maybe a chainsaw would be fun for the humans
sPart of the charm of Halo is that no matter how futuristic it is, human weapons feel distinctly human. There are actual real world equivalents to many of the UNSC weapons. The fact that we still use bullets 550 or so years into the future makes sense to us. We pick up the sniper rifle and think: Yup, that’s a sniper rifle!
There are some weapons, like the hydra, that while they aren’t quite realistic, they still have a familiar feel. That’s why taking Covenant and Promethean weapons and using them against their creators feels so good. They are foreign to us. They shoot plasma, hard light, etc. That being said, a hammer that amplifies gravity around it and a two-bladed sword held parallel to the arm (unlike the perpendicular grip of a human sword) are very alien. The idea that in a world of gun play, alien melee weapons are effective is really cool.
This raises the question: What human melee weapon can be compared to the covenant’s? I can think of plenty of melee weapons humans have used in the past, but like you said, today pretty much only combat knives are used. The thing about energy swords and gravity hammers is that they make sense in the context they come from. Humans don’t have a weapon like that that has been remade and reiterated over time to advance it, the way the sword has (remember in the Sanghelios mission where you see an old metal Elite sword?). It doesn’t make sense in the context of humans and our history to have a super powerful one-hit-kill melee weapon. I hope I answered your question.

i bet they could re-skin the energy sword to a knife. Maybe that could be another silly req weapon to play with. it could even have a mythic variant, Emile’s kukri, it could have a speed boost or something.
A Spartan needs no melee weapon…they have their fists.
You should be able to toss your guns aside and beat people about the face with your titanium-gauntleted fists honestly.

Yea kinda but those energy bayonets use Covenant technology and Knight Blades use forerunner technology.
I actually like the current set up as is. The UNSC have knifes (that are used in Assassinations and such) I think this is fine. A little off topic but related, I think melee weapons should loose there zoom feature. No melee weapon should ever be able to zoom. I hope this is removed in future Halo games.

Bayonets are about as close as we will have to human melee weapons. The assassinations that let you use a knife are cool, but you don’t get to use it as a melee weapon. I’m glad this was mentioned, b/c I immediately thought of Emile’s kukri as well. It would be cool to have that as a REQ.
What about the golf club?
How would a sonic-oscillating / high-frequency machete sound for a handheld human melee weapon?
Raiden (from Metal Gear Solid) uses a sword with said technology that can slice through titanium with ease.
In the Pre-Xbox Halo 1 screenshots, the humans did have a Machete back in the day!

Well you’re obviously right that humans haven’t continued to use swords, but that’s because you can be killed with one shot. Spartans don’t have that problem and can easily charge enemies.
while a sword would be awesome I think the best addition would be something like an energy spear to add a whole new way to fight. It would pretty much be like the pike that the honor guards used but with a more human design.

It’s not really a zoom, it’s just focusing on what’s directly in front of your spartan. I think everything else gets a little darker around the edges, but I could be wrong and that was just in infected.

You are correct! That was back when I believe Halo was still being developed for the Mac, instead of the Xbox. Covenant had the Energy Sword, Humans had a machete, which we have to assume did the same thing.
I was actually going to make a post on how to use your assassination knife for more than just assassinating. Of course, it would take skill to use the knife; you would have almost no lunge range and you would need to aim for the neck to get an instant kill, otherwise it takes two stabs to kill. I was also thinking about how you could throw the knife as well. It’s complicated, and I’m still working things out. Needless to say, I would really like to see a human melee weapon even if it’s not the knife.
Not a melee weapon, but the UNSC equivalent weapon would be the shotgun no? I understand that theres no melee component (duh) but it serves the same purpose. Close range combat, one hit kills? Pretty sure that was the idea Bungie was going with in the original Halos

Possibly, yes, but I think we were talking about how in the old games, there were times where you didn’t even have a weapon, and that it would be pretty cool to use a knife for those areas. It would allow them to keep weapons from you more than the used to. For example, like in reach when you crash to the ground from the space station, was it?
Anyway, when that happens, instead of having a random pistol that survived the crash, you could have a knife you have to get kills with to get weapons. However, your theory is not a bad one.
MACHETE!!!
