I hate the fact that people can lunge 10FT but yet I can never get a lunge/ They should reduce the lunge range. I also come across were the melee does not register.
Preach brother been coming to the same conclusion!
You know what’s interesting and kind of funny or sad? (depending upon how you look at it)
I I’ve been doing a LOT of modding for the last months (got like 300+hours into the trilogy editing kits), and in Halo 2 there’s actually code for melee attacks to make it use “cones” of damage, let me explain:
Normally, in FPS games, melee tends to be this lazy unrealistic invisible shortranged bullet which is pinpoint accurate in the middle, a small pixel-sized dot. Think all the knives, wrenches, Half-Life classic crowbar, you always needed to hit dead center as close as possible to an enemy. *
Halo 1 is no different, but enemies seem to have a semi generous hitbox, and the range isn’t too bad compared to some FPS games.
Halo 2, there’s of course still an acceptable range to hitting enemies, but here’s the kicker, there’s in the code also unused “cones”, an inner damage cone angle, and an outer one (so the hitting within you can tweak different damage compared to outer one), you can set the cone to be as large as possible, a bit like a shotgun spread, except of course no single projectile, but this blanket uniform spread.
I’ve enabled it, it works exactly as it says.
Melee with it feels so much more, realistic, swinging your rifle now can hit an area, which makes sense since a rifle is a big object and not a a small millimeter bullet.
Bungie could have used that and not implemented the autoaim lunge punch.
I assume one reason it wasn’t used is because they had that troubled crunch-riddled development.
(or still worries about console aiming? I dunno)
And I’ll admit the lunge is still pretty satisfying, the timing in the strike, the sound effect, your speed and the melee animations, the enemy staggers, knockbacks, painstates, all pretty good.
But unrealistic, and a bit frustrating.
Sad thing is, in Halo 3, though there still sort of exists that same code, and in some cases it does sort of work, they clearly moved on from it, left it to rot as a vestige of what could have been a melee that’s superior to 90+% of all other FPS melee weapons & attacks.
- Side note: I remember one of my favourite FPS games back in 2001, AvP2, I think the melee actually was good, a bit wonky, but they made the usual projectile-type melee into an actual shotgun, just “shooting” a bunch of pellets, could mod it easily with a wider spread and more projectiles, was fun as an alien to claw like crazy with all the increased hit particles, sparks, blood, tons on surfaces and enemies. Honestly wish more games did that if it’s so hard to code a conal or directional swing type damage area, just make it an invisible shortranged shotgun instead of a pistol.
Zoom in than melee for long distance
