The melee attack is just too overpowered. Not in a way that makes the game broken, but when at least half of your deaths or kills are melee kills it just feels OFF. Melee does not fit well with the very balanced guns, as the melee has a range close to old energy swords, and does way too much damage. Either a reduction in damage needs to be done, or a very small range reduction should be added. Again, the melee is not game-breaking or major but makes the game feel cheesy or off in an otherwise extremely smooth playing game. It takes you out of the game every time you die to it, as most players resort to melee even if you are 10 feet away as it provides an extreme battle advantage that will almost let them win every time. Players constantly run-up to each other in almost every fight just to melee, removing what should be a very open option of combat situations.
I don’t mind the melee personally, but I think we are seeing it more because players are having more difficulty than usual hitting their targets.
There is currently a melee bug in the game that allows you to melee at super high speeds if you reload/change weapons then melee again. I think a dev has mentioned that its fixed for the next build of the game so thats good, this may be why you are seeing a lot of melee kills.
I don’t feel the melee is any stronger than older Halo titles, often you get smacked and it takes down your shields and about half your health (which makes sense, you’re a walking tank being punched by a locomotive essentially lol). The issue that is currently running rampant is the ‘BXB’ glitch that allows you to rapid fire punches by meleeing and swapping weapons. I suspect this will either be patched by next weekend or, if not, then by release in December.

Bxb is melee, reload, melee. It is 2-3x faster than byb, which is what you’re trying to say, where you swap weapons. The swap weapon one is fine, the reload one is not and it is almost insta kill.
Also OP, you shouldn’t be that close to melee range in the first place. If you keep getting meleed, then you’re doing something wrong, or you should be meleeing too. It’s the same strength as all other halo titles. 2 melee to kill, as is tradition.

Yeah that’s what I meant, my apologies.
Its 100% waaaaaay too overpowered. Most people I am playing are just running around using melee.
They need to balance it. I would suggest they make it to when you have less than a quarter health left or something. Its ruining the game for me personally.
Besides that its great.
I’ve always played Halo as a CQC boxer, if they ever made melee anything less than a half kill there would be basically 0 point having it in the first place. That said I really hate the BXB and BYB exploits, since I feel like being able to double melee makes it way too deadly and invalidates the majority of medium to close range weapons.
Reduce the range and add spartan collision back and I think it would balance it enough. Kinda need the lunge right now to tell when to hit because if you screw it up you run right through the guy.
The combat feels really bad, from the few hours of it I’ve played in the beta this weekend. The melee is a large part of it. Between the seemingly faster speed of movement, the obviously tuned up melee locking/lunge, and a radar that feels waaaay too small for the speed at which people move, I’m seeing A LOT of combat devolve into people swinging fists at each other. It feels terrible, frankly it reminds me of the 6v6 combat in Destiny 2 but more stale.
I think the real fix is remove the melee lock on entirely. Halo has never been a game about running straight at people and punching… melee should be an act of desperation in close or something you do for a cheeky stealth kill, not the primary mode of interaction inside of 20 feet.
It also doesn’t help that the net code is obviously struggling. The hit reg feels awful, and I’m dropping a lot of frames at random times with good internet and a fairly beefy rig.
I despise the melee, and they’re going to fix it if not already fixed for the game launch thankfully. Never though this is not an issue back in the first test flight.
