Hi all,
So yesterday I decided to fire up MCC and Reach, having not played it for a while due to the frame-rate issue when trying to run over 60. Set to 120.
I’m finding that it’s making my CPU run quite hot, for what is essentially an older game. Yes, all fidelity is maxed and its running 1440p but even Warzone with RTX and HDR enabled isn’t causing my CPU to run this hot.
I have a 10 fan system, with a closed loop 4 fan push/pull setup, using a fan speed curve that hits 95% when above 80 degrees but it makes no difference. The game pegs the temp to approx 84-85.
Any ideas what’s going on? Or what setting specifically could be causing this?
Remember Halo Reach has some quality improvements, it’s not the same Halo Reach from 2010. This issue also occurs on Xbox One consoles (it starts overheating, and after reaching the limit the console automatically restarts as a security measure). If you’re on PC I would recommend you lowering down the refresh rate and the resolution to 1080p.

Which CPU are you running?
I run an AMD R9 5950X, and my temps can spike up into the 80’s briefly at times as well. Most of the time mine runs at around 68-73 on Halo MCC. I know for the AMD 5000 series, the typical gaming/rendering temps are much higher then previous versions of Ryzen CPU’s. This is all perfectly normal and intended performance according to AMD, as the Ryzen 5000 series chips are designed to run up to and at 90C for long periods without any danger of damage or reduced lifespan. If temps exceed 90C, the CPU will simply throttle its clock speed to get the temps back down a bit. The R5 parts can even run as high as 95C before throttling.

5950x too.
By comparison, Prime95 load has my CPU at 70 degrees. Likewise, other games on Ultra with RTX on and no DLSS are mid-high 70s. This game, however, shoots far higher than that for some reason.

Awesome! It really is a great chip! It is my first AMD CPU after being with Intel processors for all my previous PC’s.
So for the heat issue, is anything running in the background while you are playing MCC? I found that it doesn’t take much to get this CPU’s temp to spike briefly into the upper 80’s. Antivirus programs scanning perhaps? Make sure your cooler’s pump is allowed to max out while gaming also, can get you a few degrees difference.

Yeah, I run a pretty lean system but I will try the A/V and add Halo to allowed list, just to be sure.
Pump and CPU fans are on a 100% curve above 80 degrees, the pump is on almost 3000rpm, standard.

Yes, definitely let us know how it works out. The other thing I’d check is any overclock applied to the CPU. In Ryzen Master, it is called PBO. Reverting back to default will buy you some room as well, and cost you little to no performance. I run mine at default as that provides tons of performance while keeping the temps in check. The extra clock speed from PBO won’t make much of a difference with gaming anyways.

Sadly it made no difference.
PBO is Disabled in BIOS. Ryzen Master runs in Default mode.

Damn, last thing I could recommend is re-applying thermal paste to your CPU and making sure your cooler is tightened down properly. Your paste might have somehow gone bad or did not spread out properly across the CPU. Not enough contact with the cooler plate could also be an issue. There could also be something wrong or defective with the cooler, but I would try cleaning off and re-applying the paste first, with making sure the cooler is properly tightened down.

Probably what’s happening is that Halo MCC games are so lightly threaded, that your CPU allows itself to boost to higher clockspeeds than other games and applications. The 5950X has a really high clock ceiling so when only a few threads are being used it can go above 5GHz. Warzone and Prime95 load so many threads, it will stay at much lower clockspeeds and thus keep your temps down.

My CPU (Ryzen 9 3900x) was running at 70c - 80c yesterday. To remedy this issue, I took a look at my PC and noticed my PC was in dire need of its annual dust cleaning. After reapplying thermal paste, cleaning the heatsink, and using q-tips and isopropyl to clean each fan blade, my temps haven’t even come close to reaching 75c on max loads. I now average 65c - 70c.
Although there is a wide array of other possible reasons why one’s CPU may be reaching high temps, I noticed this worked well for me.
My Halo MCC crashes my xbox one s when I don’t have a fan on it. But even with that and how cold it is in my room. it still crashes here and there.
Is there too much HD Textures added in from all the previous updates? Any idea on how to fix it? I don’t wanna have to pay a grand for a Series X and can’t upgrade to PC yet.
