MC should have been killed off at the end of H3

Nah ive played halo my whole childhood pretty much. Chief will always be my number 1. But tbh, because halo 5 was poorly written in general, Locke never had a good chance to prove himself in the halo storyline. Youre going off of past legacies and not giving someone newer a chance. If Locke was the protagonist in halo infinite, it would’ve been just as good.

As far as I’m concerned, there were plenty of past beloved characters in halo 5 that I thought were pretty annoying, cortana and buck included. Buck is cringe lol

They should have finished off the “Reclaimer Saga” instead of panicking and hitting the reset button. Really though, any good character can live forever… if the writing is good. The problem is 343 can’t write a story to save their lives.

Before I opted out of the insider program I begged them not to do what they did. They could have worked with Osiris or another team (did anyone not want to see more of Spartan Buck?). The characters in 5 were pretty decent (I liked the dynamic between Locke and Arbi), they just needed a better writer to flesh it all out properly.

There was a lot that was set up in 4 and 5 that was just dropped or relegated to comics/books. Infinite was an insult having the Created war resolved off screen and serving up the “Not-Covenant” as the main bad guys. The actual war, the battle, the interesting part is over and 343 goes “Lets start the game after all the cool stuff has happened”. Unbelievable.

I don’t disagree at all. I didn’t like 5s campaign when it first came out, but I played it again last year and it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. They definitely dropped the ball or missed out on a good opportunity there with Locke and Osiris.

I agree. Team Osiris had the potential to be the new alpha nine or noble team as far as I’m concerned.

Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of the community is “its Chief or nothing,” mentality and its hurting the ability of the developers to move on.

I remember seeing a ton of pushback when 2 launched and people had to play as the Arbiter and they were all upset (personally I thought 2s story was the best of the franchise, thus far).

Buck is total cringe but probably still would have made for a better experience. Locke had personality they stripped from him (hes still weak to lose to hyperion though when chief brutally demolishes both of them even locke despite the little visor crack he managed. Which ima chalk up to a lucky hit since they can hit hard enough to do that normally.) But a follow orders to a t soldier isnt someone a lot of people enjoy heck even the arbiter didnt like him.

They went so many ways with the story its mental I honestly feel all three of these didnt follow eachother too closely because 343 couldnt take the criticism correctly. Heck they could have given us spartan rook (the rookie from odst I just used rook here to shorten it and it kinda fits with his abilities) since a silent protagonist isnt too much of an issue. I just fell locke was lackluster and a possible (please dont hate me for the definition of this word) tolken character replacement for johnson. I know horrible thing to say but that’s what it looks like when it comes to characters with speaking lines. And I feel that doesnt work for him.

the two women of his team are extremely forgettable as well only reason buck wasnt is weve had like 4 or 5 games with that legend now. And I believe buck deserves that title for his survival through the war after all it was an extinction event.

Locke overall isnt bad heck even palmer with her attitude problem isnt too bad as its character development. But I think that’s also where I have some hate against locke myself same with palmer. We spend 1-2 games with them then boom Mia. Same with lasky but credit where it’s due he lived longer than any keys has near chief. There was little to no development for these characters vs the 20 years weve spent with chief.

They put the newbie against the legend and sorry for my comment as a lot of the locke lovers are the newer players and they tend to blindly defend him with comments like hes had more badass moments. I’ll say maybe in 5 he had more moments as the game was centered around him and his team tracking down blue team but overall with their lifetimes of accomplishments, chief has far more experience and training. Factor in how old the two of them are and locke is actually physically older than chief as he was recruited later in his life where chief was 6 and has spent multiple years in cryo which doesnt allow your body to age it’s almost like suspension in time according to halseys notebook.

Personality wise the chief is as no nonsense as locke but chief is a no matter what where as locke prefers by the book if that makes sense the two are the same but drastically different. Plus I’m not sure how many people would say it but I personally wasnt one who enjoyed how much locke actually talked like he had too many lines that made him unlikable to some others may say it was purely because he was hunting down blue team with no question while the rest of his team was questioning it (that’s about all I remember of the females other than the lore as to why they’re on locked team which is the same as bucks lore summary in this case. “Each of these characters has joined lockes team and became Spartans because the chief has impacted their life in some way” or something like that kinda corny but makes sense since the chief is a war hero

Theres so many reason why people hate him or dislike him. These are some personal on my end but also some in there that I’ve heard and pulling them from my memory. I dont personally hate him but I dont particularly like his character I think he needs something other than a by the book kind of person.

I think Halo 3 left him in a freakin awesome place actually. They just shouldn’t have woken him up in Halo 4. Imagine if we had been following an awesome new story with a side character, and now finally at the end of Halo 6 we had just gotten a hint at where the Forward Unto Dawn might be floating, knowing that in the next game we might go rescue Chief and have him as a Johnson style NPC. How sweet would it be to have him come swing in and rescue you.

I considered that at one point, having him play a role similar to what the Arbiter ended up doing in 5. Someone you may get to interact with, but you aren’t don’t play as.

Killing Chief severs this desire to bring him back (because we can’t, he’s dead).

I don’t like the hero worship of Chief either. That isn’t to say he’s hasn’t done some pretty badass things throughout the series, but it simply isn’t believable in a military sense. People in the military who are highly decorated end up getting shoe horned into bs publicity stunts to drum up support and recruitment efforts.

I think he deserved an on par to Noble 6 death. Fighting off waves and waves of Covenant forces (or flood forces) before setting off the ring in 3.

Then we can start over, literally a clean slate.

I just love the final cutscene of Halo 3 so much. This current point in the Halo timeline, with the UNSC defeated and broken (again lol,) would be a great time for him to return in an NPC role. I agree he shouldn’t be a playable character and I agree hugely on the hero worship thing. The new TV show makes him look like Captain Halo or something.

Or they could just leave him indefinitely floating off into space. The emotional vibe of it was just super on point. That said, the marketing for Halo 3 definitely had me disappointed when he survived through the end.

Master Chief isn’t the issue with the franchise. Microsoft’s/343’s upper management is.,

Maybe its just hindsight. I do love the ending to 3, but…343 just totally f’d the narrative all up.

… I still think Locke is a cool character and can be developed into a beloved classic like the rest of the characters in time if done right. The “by the book follow orders brick meat head” that Locke is known to be is an excellent foundation for potential character development. Hes worthy of being a protagonist. By far.
