But if you look at the Chief wearing the cloak in the teaser something seems off, I then thought about his cracked visor and deteriorating armor condition, then back to the cloak. If you do indeed look at the cloak starting at 1:45 into the video you can clearly see his chest piece outline in the cloak, then comes the shocker.
Pause the video, look at his neck area between his neck and his shoulders, there is not enough room under that cloak for his back plate which includes his
1: Thruster
2: Shielding unit
3: Reactor/Power source for the armor.

Now, this is just a theory and a far-fetched one at that, but I believe at the point in time depicted in the trailer that the Chiefs armor is well past the point of repair and that he quite possibly removed some of it or it was removed from him by something else. (wouldn’t be the first time spartan II’s messed with their armor on the field)
Regardless, tell me what you think, what’s your opinion on my theory and what theories do you have?
Ps. This is not a complaint or hate thread, take that elsewhere.
A lot of ways, this makes sense, however I just believe that it was for the sole purpose of tracking everybody off the idea that this would be a halo game, then all of a sudden BAM! Chief’s wrist and helmet. I would like to think its more than that, but it’s seems like the more logical explanation.
I thought it was just to surprise people at first too, then I saw this on the Unbiased facts topic.
6. Master Chief is masking his appearance on purpose (with a cloth cloak), confirmed by Frankie on NeoGAF.

Frankie confirmed he’s deliberately masking his appearance, implying he’s in hiding; if it was for the sake of the trailer he’d just say that. Plus let’s be honest: would they do something that serious–giving the Chief Jedi robes–if it weren’t representative of the actual game?
something also inline with this theory: notice his gait. it seems as if it may be labored and possibly a slight limp. it could also be part of him masking his presence and deceptively not walking with his normal uniform and disciplined gait.

It was stated that this would be darker than previous Halo games… now I wonder how that would fit in…
Also, my first thought was he did not look bulky enough under that cloak. So I definitely think he is missing most of his armor. This theory might be more than a theory already.
I doubt Chief would bother wearing a cloak to hide from the Covenant or Prometheans. I imagine he’s “gone rogue”. Which would make Halo 5’s storyline extremely exciting!
it definitly could just be just to throw you off from thinking its the cheif but i do hope they’re gone they made the backs of the spartans look so weird.

Revenge?
Or… He made a promise. John has always kept his promises to Cortana.
The promise was bringing her to Halsey, and this would connect the research of Cortana and Halsey in a possible halo 5 plot.
I think this theory is realistic, is connected with spartan ops and also with “Master chief’s Humanity concept”, and the promise is an element common to many previous games.

Especially seeing as Cortana mentioned to chief how the UNSC had ‘replaced him’ with the Spartan 4s
I think he may very well be wearing some armor we have yet to see, underneath. They removed it symbolically at the end of the Halo 4 campaign. They wouldn’t do that without giving him something new, or forcing him into circumstances where he’s forced into his old armor and it gets removed/damaged from battle(as another symbolic gesture).
And he does seem to be limping somewhat. Spartan IIs aren’t completely invincible. A rough enough engagement, hard fall, or somesuch could be enough damage to cause serious injury through a suit.
Him keeping the helmet is curious, I still think he might have been forced into sudden circumstances where bits of his old armor were required to finish armor assembly for combat purposes. Or…he could be keeping it for sentimental reasons, but I’d consider him a slightly more logical fellow than that.
It’s also key to notice he’s still wearing the right arm of his original Mark VI.
If my theory is correct and he is missing armor, most notable the back plate which remember, includes his armors power source, he may be walking oddly due to the strain of manually dragging around what’s left of his armor on his body.
