Mature Sound Conversation

I’ve seen many ups and downs about the sounds of the game, so I’m going to go through my opinions of them and let you all discuss what you think. Please don’t rant. I just want to see some sensible comments on what you think is good, bad, what needs to be fixed, your suggestions, etc.

*One thing to note: Almost all sounds we’ve heard so far will not be as good as playing it on your TV.

The following are my opinions. I’m doing UNSC weapons only and a few Covenant, because we haven’t heard much else.

Assault Rifle: Awesome. Very satisfying sound, you can tell it packs a punch.
Battle Rifle: Nice. Has a “rolling” feel to it. I can imagine each bullet being pressed up and flung out of the gun.
DMR: Great. Sounds more weighty than Reach’s. Could use more echo, to give it a more powerful feel.
Shotgun: Ok. The initial shot sounds fine, but it ends too quick. Perhaps some echo?
Magnum: Can use improvement. Sounds kind of like a stapler. I guess it’s alright, though.
Sniper: Disappointing. Recorded with a Barrett? Hard to believe.
Rocket Launcher: Haven’t heard too much of it, but sounds fine. Has a little digital noise when fired, which confuses me, but it’s pretty cool.
Railgun: Haven’t really heard enough.
Sticky Detonator: Sounds pretty normal, haven’t heard too much.
SAW: Very fast and heavy sounding. Good.

Storm Rifle: Not terrible. I can get used to it, but it differs greatly from previous plasma weapons. As a gun itself, it actually sounds pretty cool.
Needler: Very nice, actually. This is how I imagined a Needler should sound. They are crystalline, glass-like shards, right? The sound matches up.
Gravity Hammer: Doesn’t sound up to par. This thing is supposed to crack bones and send people flying across rooms. Make it sound like it does.
Carbine: Nice. Sounds rather similar to Halo 3, and it suits the concept of the gun well.
Plasma Pistol: Very, very different. Charge up is ok and the release is ok, but I prefer the older ones.

Scattershot: Suits what I would imagine a gun like it to be.

Well that’s it for now. What are your thoughts? Feel free to discuss any vehicles you’ve heard, too, and linking to sounds would be nice! (Didn’t do it here because of how many weapons there are.)
My overall opinion on the whole thing: I like it. Some guns could use improvements, mostly the sniper and hammer, but overall I like the direction they have taken.

Plasma pistol?

Also the only reasons why I hate a few of the weapons is just how dull some sound compared to previous Halo games like the

Plasma pistol: very different and has no familar sounds at all.

Needler: sounds too quite compared to previous games.

Gravity Hammer: again too quite/Sharp compared to previous games.

and thats all the complaints I have about the weapons.

> Plasma pistol?

Right. Left out that and the SAW.
I’ll fix it.

I agree even coming through my iPod headphones, the sounds was great. I can’t wait to here it through my TV.

Ahhh, a civilised thread and nicely presented too!

Assault Rifle: Awesome. Very satisfying sound, you can tell it packs a punch.

Battle Rifle: Not nice. Needs to sound less ‘clinky’ and more like Halo3’s sound

DMR: Great. Sounds more weighty than Reach’s. Could use more echo, to give it a more powerful feel.

Shotgun: Needs to be longer, deeper and pack more putch!

Magnum: Not bad. More like Halo2 would be better seeing as it is no longer as powerful as reach. It just needs more ‘character’.

Sniper: Keep it like Reach or Halo3 -anything else sounds odd

Rocket Launcher: Nice trailing sound although explosion and launching effect are a little lacking and -like the shotgun- need more ‘umph!’

Railgun: From what I have heard I think it needs a louder noise however it also sounds fine as it is so I’m not that bothered

Sticky Detonator: Sounds pretty normal, haven’t heard too much.

Storm Rifle: Not terrible. I can get used to it, but it differs greatly from previous plasma weapons. As a gun itself, it actually sounds pretty cool.

Needler: All right. It sounds very odd when compared to previous Halo games -I could get used to it

Gravity Hammer: Doesn’t sound up to par. This thing is supposed to crack bones and send people flying across rooms. Make it sound like it does. -Needs more ‘umph!’

Carbine: Nice. Sounds rather similar to Halo 3, and it suits the concept of the gun well.

Yeah, I’m hoping the “umph” you mentioned will show up once we have the game playing. I think a lot of videos we’ve seen didn’t have as much bass as Halo should.

Also forgot the Scattershot. Adding that.

I gotta admit, when I saw the title “Mature Sound Conversation” I was half expecting this thread to be about noises you’d hear in -Yoink-.

Edit: Huh, didn’t realize that would be yoiked. Well I’ll call them adult films instead.

Human Weapons:
Assault Rifle: Probably the best of the human weapon sounds. My only issue with it is I know exactly what firearm they used to record it.
Battle Rifle: Decent. A lot better since they added the original BR audio to the backtrack.
DMR: Probably the second best human weapon sound. Loud, punchy, all sorts of awesome. Definitely needs a bit more of an echo when fired outdoors.
Shotgun: The initial shot sounds great, but it needs some resonance. Especially when outdoors. And the racking of the pump sounds weak, almost like the used a nerf gun.
Magnum: Probably the worst out of the human weapons. It sounds like a squeegee. Needs some serious improvement.
Sniper: Good in some aspects, horrible in others. Can’t pin down exactly what it is but there’s something off about it.
Rocket Launcher: Really don’t like the Promethean-esque sound when it fires. If they removed that, it would sound fine.
Spartan Laser: Sounds really powerful. I like it a lot.
Railgun: Sounds freaking awesome.
Sticky Detonator: Sounds fine.
SAW: Haven’t really heard enough but I wasn’t a huge fan of what I heard.
Covenant Weapons:
Storm Rifle: Decent. Doesn’t sound like a plasma weapon though which really needs to be fixed.
Needler: It actually sounds pretty awesome. I miss the old, classic audio though.
Gravity Hammer: I actually really like it. It needs more resonance though.
Carbine: Sounds too much like a human weapon.
Plasma Pistol: I don’t like it at all. It sounds nothing like a plasma weapon and the charged shot sounds like the DMR when it’s released.
Promethean Weapons:
All the Promethean weapons sound cool and unique.
Human Vehicles:
Warthog: Hate it. It sounds like the Mongoose from past games and nothing like the iconic sound we all know and love.
Mongoose: Sounds really awesome this time around. Much louder and overall better in my opinion.
Scorpion: Sounds pretty good from what I’ve heard so far. I don’t like the generic robotic sound when the main gun rotates though.
Covenant Vehicles:
Ghost: Same as the Warthog.
Banshee:

I also don’t like the big whacking, static sound that happens whenever you die.

One other note, I noticed that nothing seems to have any resonance when it’s not fired from first-person. Things don’t echo outdoors like they should, etc. I really hope that’s fixed.

Yeah, I noticed that. I hope they put in Spartan voices like in previous games when they die.

THIS^

I like all of the new sounds. I’d sooner have a complete overhaul then have sounds recycled from the previous game, like Reach seemed to have. Also, to me, the guns sound plenty powerful. The mix of realism and futuristic sounds makes me giddy with excitement. They finally sound like guns that would fit in a sci-fi game.
