Matchmaking

Not sure if this is just confirmation bias, but recently and increasingly I’ve seemed to find myself matched into teams (across ranked and social) where no matter what my performance is (including 8+ KDA games: which is out of the ordinary for me) I lose because I’ve been matched into games where my team are woeful whereas the enemy are pretty competent.

I know Halo is a team game and I know that this is why we have clubs and Spartan Companies etc, but things like that are really ruining my enjoyment of the game: if I have a bad game and my team loses I can take it, if I play badly and my team still wins: great, if I play well and we win: wonderful, but when I’m being dragged down by random players on my team it makes me not want to play unless I can fill a fireteam… which is a real disincentive to hop on for a few games if I have 15 minutes to kill

We’ve all been there. I know this issue all too well myself, paired with teammates of questionable skill - which I have to carry for most of the match - all the while fighting off a more skilled enemy team. The little demon behind it all is our matchmaking rating (MMR for short). It’s bothered me to the point that I don’t play Halo as much; you’ll find me playing World of Tanks and Forza Horizon 4 for example.

There’s a new Head to Head playlist if that’s your style too.

After a few of those unfortunate games I usually go to FFA. Head to Head is great because I can win a 1v1 fight, but I find it hard when 3 other players attack me while my shields are down. This isn’t a problem in Head to Head.

Nope, you’re not the only one. It’s been driving me insane. Most of my losses recently have not been exciting and close because everyone is playing hard and trying to win and the other team simply outplays us. Nope, there’s one daredevil running out into the middle trying to out-AR someone across the map who’s got a Binary. Not sure if it’s TS2 having issues or some Game Pass users hellbent on performing poorly. Now the scenario before is hyperbole (slightly; it’s gotten close to that level of stupid), but the match right before posting this there was a guy chasing a pristine Ghost with a Boltshot. Ran right into the open. Guess how well he/she did? We lost because of one player… yet again.

It honestly feels like the game is penalizing good players by sticking them with people who don’t know how to play or don’t have any presence of mind to even attempt to play it right. It’s insulting and it’s crazy this is the way matchmaking works in Halo 5 without the option to block anyone like that.

I find that it doesn’t seem to match the entire lobby to the same skill level, but rather maybe one player matches another on each team.

I’ve had plenty of games where there’s one player on each team with a +10 K/D at the top, and right at the bottom is a -15 K/D on both teams. Then the game becomes protect your bottom player more than the other team does theirs.
