Matchmaking (War Games) does not need a story

It’s an alright concept for a story, War Games but at the end of the day Matchmaking has a few purposes, to play online to rank up/have fun. I don’t really think people even noticed there was a story behind Halo 4’s Matchmaking at some point in their spartan career. Oh… and then we can have Elites playable in any gametype.

Escalation showed us that Elites can be and are programmed into the War Games sim, so there’s still that possibility for Halo 5 - assuming they keep the War Games concept for the multiplayer and don’t replace it with something else or otherwise change it drastically.

^ In addition to that, there’s nothing stopping 343 from writing them into the story. We know Arbiter will be helping Agent Locke in some way, maybe some Elites will follow suite by joining the Spartans.

I’m 50/50 on it but I think all things considered I’d just like it to go back to the way it was.

The only issue there is - you’re playing as Spartans pretending to be elites. That wouldn’t personally bother me, because I prefer to play as a Spartan, but I could see how some people wouldn’t be completely satisfied with that.

Also, if the Halo 5 multiplayer trailer is anything to go by, it looks like they’re keeping the War Games backstory.

Or, Or, OR, You are actually playing as an Elite who is allied to the Arbiter whom is fighting alongside the Spartans for training purposes.

That would be better, yes. But in Escalation, it was Spartans appearing as elites in war games.

I thought the elites were just computer generated AI for combat simulations.

Putting multiplayer into the canon was an interesting concept but ultimately I liked it better when it wasn’t. Hopping into matchmaking or custom games should just feel like a casual experience completely outside the story. It’s what you do when you get off school or work to relax. That’s how pregame lobbies in previous Halo’s felt like: relaxed and comfortable.

I really didn’t see any problem with there being a story behind War Games, it didn’t really change anything besides having one.

Honestly I don’t mind the story in the multiplayer. Nobody paid attention to the story in the first place. Plus, it’s kind of hard to make “highly lethal Spartan-IV’s playing Cops and Robbers and then dragging their crotch all over their dead friend’s face” canon.
