matchmaking lobby and player generation

I am almost positive this doesn’t really have anything to do with it but…I have noticed when im sitting in the lobby waiting for the game to load or while voting, that either numerous people may share a certain color scheme, emblem design or usually and specifically letters in their gamertag i.e. 4-6 will start with the same letters kinda thing. So I have to ask, how does matchmaking work?

Matchmaking uses an invisible TrueSkill system to match you up with other players.

If you are seeing things like this commonly, its just pot luck.

Whats this trueskill system? Does that run beside your settings, per say like have the fastest connection applied.

> Whats this trueskill system? Does that run beside your settings, per say like have the fastest connection applied.

Remember Halo 3’s 1-50, that was TrueSkill, it tries to match you of those with similar skill levels.

If you set custom search restrictions, it will attempt to search for these as well as TrueSkill.

Those people are in a clan together. A big sign of a clan is often the matching emblems, color schemes, etc.

As The Little Moa said, Matchmaking uses an invisible TrueSkill system to pair you with other players.

Also, welcome to Waypoint!

TrueSkill , interesting. Uses a formula based on average skill and uncertainy in the players skill The idea is to be accurate on the players portfolio it seems then assign a skill rating, then to match by comparing skill values.

btw I know what clans are.

Trueskill does not work in this game. MLG pros getting matched up against new players is a clear sign that it does not work. That is an example of the absolute extremes of the spectrum, it is just as bad in any other instance.

This right here, TrueSkill in Reach is not as strict as it was in Halo 2 or Halo 3.

I agree, there are bugs in the TrueSkill, lotta bugs

> I agree, there are bugs in the TrueSkill, lotta bugs

You really can’t say that because even with the skill search restriction selected TrueSkill weighing is so low it’s non-existent.

This. There’s nothing wrong with TrueSkill. Reach just uses it as little as possible, and deliberately so.

From the way it explained it, it seemed that TrueSkill is a component to being on XBL. Why doesn’t Reach use it, i mean the TrueSkill seems to already works along side a games ranking system?

It only works well if they decide to implement it, Reach uses it, but not to an extent were you will always be playing competitive matches.

I wish you guys would actually read OP’s post. ¬¬

Ignore the argument about true skill. You are getting matched up with teams of four. People like to share the same emblem or prefixes of gamer tags because they are in a clan.

> Example;
>
> KSI Joe Bloggs
> oG Joe Bloggs
> H3M Joe Bloggs

It’s just how some clans organize themselves. Personally I find it sad.

Why? Why do you find it sad?

Changing your name based on a clan is a bit, odd if you ask me.

To you, perhaps. In the early days of online gaming clans were essentially what you guys now call teams, and they were everywhere. The purpose of a clan was to get a bunch of players united under one name (thus the clan prefix). Some clans were in it to create the best team in the game and they fought each other to see who was top dog. Others made clans about glitching or frag movies. It’s all in good fun and just apart of the online experience. Though the words “team” and “clan” are interchangeable it seems “clan” has a negative aura surrounding it nowadays, only on consoles though. Odd, really.

In the early days I would understand it, but these days there are Service Tags in most common games, including CoD and Halo, it just seems odd to me people would change their name to reflect on a clan when there are in-game feature for it.

Either way, its my opinion, we are all different.

@o0MrCheesy0o

I totally understand what you are saying about clans. Being a pc gamer CS:S clan battles are always hyper competitive. I would even go to the extent saying a “WoW” guild is basically a clan. Those too are very competitive especially in PvP.

The connotation on consoles that clan’s are sad is the fact that most clans are now ran and lusted after by 13 year olds. It’s more the social standing of “Clan meetings” for the sake of it. Change your name to be cool, I am this rank etc… it’s all very childish.

In the Original sense of the word clan battles are MLG teams. That’s why i find it sad, if you’re competitive enough to enter tournaments then ok. Have a team.

But the idea of a clan has downgraded purely for the childish antics. Back in Halo 2? Fine, especially with the playlists.

Plus KSI - Sunday Bible service really?

… if you read the thread, you would realize right in the beginning i was excluding the obvious points of recognizing clans. you have got to be kidding me that this wrapped into that, that was a technical question about TrueSkill, TrueSkill so don’t go off topic. … im done with this thread.
